Default Advice from 964 community

I gave up looking for a 964 coupe a few years ago, but am considering searching again, regardless of the price increases. I am hoping someone would comment on the C4 vs the C2 since many more C4s seems to be for sale.
Also, if willing to consider this expense, is the RSA really worth the prices being asked. I have heard its just a liteweight 964 but I am sure there is much more to the car than that.
Thanks for any opinions, comments.

Regarding the C4, I am aware of the most obvious differences of the AWD feature, but was looking for downsides other than added weight.

Wow this could get interesting.

Personal experience. I have not had to spend any additional money to repair or maintain the four wheel drive mechanics.

My maintenance so far in 11 years of ownership - clutch replacement ($3,600); HVAC adjustments ($600); minor engine work to deal with a small leak ($500); repairs to my wheels including a complete dis-assembly of all components and new paint and new bolts ($1,500); new tires ($900); replacement of the pad above the engine ($600) and lots of oil changes (approx $300 per year).

Of course lots more can go wrong with the 4 wheel drive system vs. a 2 wheel drive system and the cost involved will be lots and lots of money.

For me I bought my 964 on a whim and did not consider at all the additional potential issues with the C4 system or the additional weight and driving dynamics.

Maybe if I give it more thought I would not have bought it.

Not sure that the RSA is worth the extra cash, but it depends on how you plan to use it. It's possibly better to buy a standard C2 or C4 as they can both be easily modified to be better than the RSA for less money than the premium to buy the RSA. It depends on what you want really. The SA was essentially a low options C2 + manual steering rack. I don't think any of the chassis modifications done for the Euro RS were applied.

I've had both a C2 and a C4. Whilst I prefer the C2, the C4 was also a great car to drive, and as you say, there are a lot more C4's for sale. As such, if I was looking now, I would be the best condition car I could find, regardless of if it was a C2 or a C4.

Yep, that'd be my 2 cents. Go for whichever is available in the condition/mileage your budget allows. Either way, you won't be disappointed!

MY89.5-91<MY92-94<RSA...from a price perspective
C4<C2 figure 10-20% premium however as these cars age condition trumps all including mileage, color and RWD vs 4WD.
C2's drive much differently than C4's...many threads here discuss this.
Most difficult combination to find and therefore priciest is MY92-94 C2 MT coupe as only a few hundred were made in total for the US market. Expect to pay well north of $50k for a well sorted no stories, C2 MT coup example.
RSA's while certainly a good car, are the most overrated (price wise) for the limited edition versions; other than manual steering rack, corded cloth interior and a slightly different style fixed spoiler, there were no differences. And ironically there were more RSA's produced than C2 MT coupes in their respective years of 93-94.

more RSA was produced than C2 MT in 93-94? Interesting, I didn't know that.
how many of each were produced?

The RSA isn't worth the extra cash if performance is important to you.

I think it's a good time to look, I think the prices have begun to moderate.
I would rather have a lightly modded C2 (all the same mods I would make to an RSA save the manual rack) extra cash in my pocket and no worry about its loss of value or risk. And I love the RSA, it's just not as fun and carefree as it used to be....
Don't care for the handling of the 4, I do notice a big difference.

Thanks for the opinions and some detailed comments. Seems like super high cost of clutch repair vs what I paid professional mechanic and oem parts for my 2003 C4S...wow...all other stated repair costs seems reasonable.

Thanks again. I am in the early stages of seriously considering selling one of mine to buy a 964 coupe, while I love the rawness and uniqueness of both 911s I feel fortunate to own.

Hmmm... If I had your current stable I would consider swapping the SC for a 964. if it's more of a fair day collection and you have the $$$ I would consider the RSA, then add an early 70s car and you'd have a comprehensive porsche driving experience....if you have the room just keep the wessach too...what the hell...

Btw I daily drove an 84 and later an RSA...no prob....

Thanks for comments. Seems most C2s are for sale by dealers for close to $80k at the 50k mile mark.
I drive my cars to cars coffee, shows, some Porche club drives/events, and for pleasure, but do not track the current ones.
Have considered selling the Weissach or the GT3 since the GT3 is such a beast it has somewhat limited potential on public roads but a blast in 3rd and 4th gears without going over 5k rpm. Weissach some appreciation last 2 years since purchased...alot to consider and thanks again to all for comments.
