Default Rust bubbles on engine cover

These bubbles have been festering as long as I've had the car (8 years). The big blister has started to pop, so I'm thinking its time to do something about it.

I went to a good body shop and they thought the rust was coming from the underside. Real hard to tell as that area is covered by a brace.

So only way to tell is to "dig in". Once I'm done, regardless of what I find, I'll want to neutralize the exposed rust and prime the spot. I'll then talk to shop about next steps.

Any recommendations on products to use against the rust?

I'm no body man, but the POR-15 products are very good for rust issues too. Tricky spot under the bracing. I would be interested to see how the body shop tackles it.

Alternatively, Getty has a glass lid for ~$500. Considering the price of body shop labor, that may be a path worth investigating? -Assuming their lids don't require any fitting work.

Its my guess that lid was worked on in the past. Is the paint original? Time for a ducktail!

Yes its been painted. Had damage on right rear quarter. I am thinking cover might be a replacement that had rust issue.

I guess this isnt a common issue.

I'l get a rust neutralizer and dig into it. We'l see.

About ducktail. Besides appearance any other advantages? Downforce? Cooling?

Oddly enough I've had a small rust bubble in exactly the same place, when I had it repaired it turned out to be a small hole and had rotted from the inside out.
