Default Le Mans DVD

I just bought the Le Mans DVD and can totally recommend it.Forget the slushy story line and watch the racing on widescreen tv with surround sound speakers,if the hairs on your neck dont stand up watching Mr Mcqueen and co doing their thing you aint a petrolhead.A 911 driven by Mcqueen is also featured in the opening titles.Anyone got a 917 gulf they can lend me for a weekend please.

Paul,

Whole heartedly agree. The DVD is so cleaned up over the VHS video, the difference is tremendous. Too bad Paramount didn't do the same thing with the "Shogun" DVD release.

I agree!
That! Is the movie that got me into this whole car passion thing. I was 4 years old. Even at the young age, for some reason I was always drawn to the Gulf Porsches more than the Ferraris.

I still have the VHS version, but still love every race moment.

The filmography is purely superbe, and still mocks the car chases we see today, even with the special effects computers!

Thanks for the reviving some great memories!

Greg

I did the same - watched it at the weekend. The best racing film ever! Never seen it before.

Funny, I bought and watched it for the first time just a few weks ago! Makes you realize just what drivel the current crop of 'car movies' is!

I remember watching the film Greg when I was very young and It had the same affect on me,The Gulf Porsche model car I had at the time was everything to me,I forget how many times I created Le Mans on my Parents front room carpet, the Gulf Porsche always beat the Ferraris in my Le Mans fantasy world I'm pleased to say
This film catches the era and the cars superbly.I have great respect for the guys who drove those cars, all raw power and right on the limit, you get it wrong and you loose your life as many did, These guys were true racing heroes and not your poofy traction control brigade.

It is truly stunning.

If you do want to buy it via Amazon, why not use the links on the Le Mans pages of My 964 Site in the Events section.

Or via these links here:

Amazon UK
Amazon US

A tiny piece of you order goes towards my site's hosting costs.

Have you bought it, Rob?
If so, can I borrow it, please?

I ended up in front of Richard Attwood in the ice cream queue at Eynsham last month and had a chat about the movie. The crash cars were remote controlled but of course once they had hit the first barrier things did not continue as planned. The throttle stuck open and the remote cut-off did not work and thus full-on drive stayed on the rear wheels. You can see them still driving on the third barrier hit. Richard said they had to wait for the car to run out of fuel and everyone was keeping very much on their toes not knowing what might happen next. He also said that although the race was run in the rain, much of the 917/Ferrari footage was on a track that was sprayed with localised fireman hose water. I though the continuity was very good considering. One thing I spotted was that a dawn shot with the sun rising on the Mulsanne straight must have been actually shot at dusk with the sun setting as the cars were driving straight into the sun. Something I remember doing one mad-Friday a couple of years ago.
See you there next year.

...'course you can. Left it at the cottage though, so I'll try to remember to bring it back with me this weekend.

"Le Mans" the movie caught very well what was to me a most notable aspect of the race: that continuous wall of ear-splitting sound that envelopes and isolates you from the teeming crowd and even close companions. You can see the same thing happening to Steve McQueen in the movie.

The movie was awesome! I was expecting some additional footage but it was released identically to the VHS version. A couple of years ago, Speedvision showed the movie narrated by Chad McQueen which had a bunch of different race scenes. I believe it was about 10 minutes longer than the VHS version.

As the winter apporaches and as a supplement to the movie, go out and get the book "A French Kiss with Death" which provided much of the back up to what we saw in the movie.

Anyone know where I can buy this in the UK without a 11 day delivery time? Alternatively, anyone in London willing to lend me theirs?
