Weight Saving
As is often discussed on this board one way to improve performance is to reduce weight. One of the areas where weight can be reduced is by removing the sound deadening from around the car. However road noise is not something I have any wish to increase as my 964 is my daily drive and I don't want it to be unbearable over a long journey.
I was thinking about this and I did wonder whether some of the sound deadening materials used in car stereo installs (Dynamat is it?) was lighter and good enough to replace the existing stuff with. Does anyone have any experience of it and any details of cost, ease of use etc?
Thanks,
Jim.

Nope no experience with that, but I did save 22kgs from the rear of the car by installing a new exhaust. You can also consider:
1. Aircon
2. Rear seats
3. driver and passenger seats (replace with GT3 or other lwt seat)
4. Smaller battery
5. Washer bottle
6. Windows (change to thinner glass or perspex)
7. magnesium or very lightweight wheels
8. carbon fibre body panels
9. remove foglights if legal
I am sure there a lot more, and there have been posts in the past but don't know if you can find by searching as some go way back.

I'm not sure how much lighter sound deadening you could get but since heavier is better (in sound deadening) I doubt you can save much.
And taking old sound deadening & carpets is a royal PITA, I don't think it would be worth to change the deadening. You'll either have to live with noisier (& lighter!) car or keep it as it is.
BTW, my 993 weights 2860 lbs with FULL tank of gas (full tank is ~ 116 lbs).

If you don't have a rollbar installed, it's fairly easy to remove the sound dampening in the back seat area. Undo the 4 screws and remove the back seating vinyl. The padding is on the passenger compartment side and around the stereo speakers. About 6 or 7 lbs worth. As I recall, RS and RS America don't have it, and since taking it out, I haven't noticed an increase in noise.
