Odometer gears are fine as is the circuit board. Given I swapped the other car's speedo in and it worked, I'm stumped here.

I'm still visualising the reason for the spring loaded bush on the back of the motor.

The last technician said he couldn't find a reason for the non working odometer so lubed the workings and reassembled it. That's fine but this area is the only obvious lubed area is circled here. It's actually quite sticky. I may just clean that up and reassemble it to see what happens.

I cleaned up the viscous lube and reassembled the gauge. Next up is checking it works before refitting the bezel.

Btw the chip on the board is a generic UAF 2115 set to divide by 128 (pin 11 is joined to pin 10). If it's broken it will cost $2 to replace.

Reassembled except for the bezel and glass. The first 10km tested ok. If this stops again I will start checking the discrete components.
