Default Original 964 in dash CD/Radio

Was the '94 964 offered with an in dash CD/Radio unit combined? If so what make and model? I"m trying to get a more authentic look to my dash. I currently have an Alpine CD/Radio head unit installed. I'm aware of the Becker CRD210 but I think this was first offered on the 993? I don't want to install a remote cd changer in the front trunk.

Thanks,

JF

I believe the CR-210 and CDR-210 were available as an option in the later 964s. For sure I have seen one in a 964 Speedster. I installed the CR-210 with frunk mounted 6 disk Porsche CD changer in my '90 and it looks absolutely factory.

Picture of CDR-210 for reference.

Cheers!

Porsche CD-2 was the only OEM in-dash CD offered in the 964 era. It was actually introduced in 1988 in the 3.2 Carrera/930 and offered through 964 production. The unit is made by Alpine. I can take a photo if you need one. It wasn't super common as the option cost was ludicrous. As a reference it was $1,023 in 1991 on a 964 Coupe! That's $1,800 in todays prices!

Funny story, a guy on Pelican has one for sale that he claims in NOS but fully rebuilt (which one is it..) but he wants.... $6500.... I am all for NOS parts bringing the big $$ but that sets a new high water mark, I think he will own it for awhile!

A picture of the CD-2 would be great.

Thanks,

CR-210 and CDR-210 were the factory radios on 1996 and later 993s and Boxsters.

Here's a picture of the CD-2, they are really hard to find these days:

Mine still has the factory deck and I replaced the factory Blaupunkt amp under the passenger seat with a new Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4.

The CR-1 Cassette and CD-2 CD player have to be some of the worst sounding head units. Even if you update the speakers and amp they still sound like crap. I switched mine out with Nakamichi units which sound so much better but kept them all for someday you may never know.

Never use the stereo anyhow.

Mine has a Nakamichi head unit in it now but I have an original CD-2. I plan on swapping the CD-2 back in soon. I never listen to the radio anyways so it might as well be original I guess.

Not heard the CD-2 but the CDR210 which would look great in a 964 and has the built in changer you are looking for also sadly sounds not so great, even with new speakers. I removed mine in perfect (NOS lol!) shape and installed a CDR220 which also looks great, has the built in cd player you are looking for, sounds significantly better than the CDR210, and the best part is they are prob going to be the most affordable since they came in early boxsters and 996s which are not becomimg sought after Porsches quite yet

Which Nakamichi Head Units did you install?

Thanks,

Joseph

I have two CD500's and a CD400 in my C2 with Aux in. Did this a number of years back. Simple clean and enough power built in. My turbo has a Sapphire amp and other than the C2 have MB quart speakers. Not sure the sapphire amp adds much to the sound quality over the Nak but it was installed by the PO so I left it. I have the original unit for the turbo a CR-1 with aux 6 disc changer. I am thinking of returning to stock as well.

It is hard to listen to anything but my dedicated two channel at home. The exhaust note is always in competition. I have no Cat on my WG so when it dumps boost there is no listening to music other than the sound of exhaust. Although the stereo in my Cayenne GTS is not half bad neither is the one in my Ford.

I located a NOS Nakamichi CD400, at a reasonable price.

The 400 is more than good enough. Just make sure it has all the connectors. The wiring harness is hard to come by.

Well I just learned something here. I bought a CD-2 on eBay a few years back ($60) in working condition with the code (never tested though). I had always thought I was missing a trim ring but see from the pictures above that there isn't one!

No plans to install it or sell the CD-2. It went into the box with all the other stuff I've swapped out over the years. Maybe someday I'll put it back to stock....seeing as I just got collector plates for it.
