I just got (a different) set of ramps - but my car is too low for them - I suppose I could put a 2x6 on the ground and drive up those and then the ramp...

Regarding oil change frequency, I was recently at a local dealership for a promotional "ask a tech session - assess your air cooled Porsche" - he said they currently recommend once a year oil changes on the air cooled cars??

There are lots of debates on which brand and thickness oil to run, but I have always been advised (until now) to do oil changes (at least) twice a year.

Anyone out there do once a year changes??

I drive less than 4,000 miles per year and do one oil change.

Every 5000 miles, or 12 months, whichever comes first.

I'm looking to change the oil in my 92 model 964. After spending the whole afternoon reading forums here and other places, levels of ZDDP, API SL vs SM/SN, etc... and searching what is available in my market (Europe) I think I found the best option. Mind you I live in a hot country (winter garage not <5ºC summer up to 45ºC).

What do you think about Mobil 1 Peak Life 5w50
API SN,SM,SL
In the PORSCHE A40 list

it supposedly has 2200ppm of zddp, but I have not been able to verify it...

This is the technical specification:
http://www.mobil1.co.uk/synthetic-en...fications#tabs

And is reasonably priced at 39.95€ for 4L. (9.98€/L)
http://lubricantes-online.com/epages.../Products/2202

Does anyone know the ZDDP content of Mobil 1 Peak Life 5w50?
Anyone using it?

Another option is the Motul competition 300v 15w50 (11.45€/L) but not sure about running a competition oil on street car and ocasional track day. Also a rating of 15 might be two high for cold starts in winter?

What do you think, is the Mobil 1 Peak Life 5w50 good for our 964s?

About 1,100 ppm zinc and about 1,100 phosphorus. No higher.

Ah, it's been a while since I've enjoyed an oil thread.

Fwiw I've been very pleased with Amsoil Z-rod 20w-50. Full synthetic, high zddp.

More than the brand, I think the 20w-50 works really nicely in the air cooled engine. It seems to quiet the valve train and the engine just runs smoothly with it. My drips were lessened as well, I suppose logically with thicker oil.

The only advice I'd give is not to use a thinner oil.

Cheers.

Thanx LexVan, so the information about the Peak Life's ZDDP I found was incorrect

Tmistry, I tried to find Amsoil in Europe and I can't, neither Brad Penn.

Motorbike oil, Mobil 1 V-Twin, which is recomended by many also, I cannot find

Could be an alternative Mobile 1 Racing 4T 15w50 which apparently has high content of ZDDP (as it is exempt from cars legislations)?
I read here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/...reality/page-3 that apparently they use it on Australia by HRT (Holden Racing Team) in their V8 Race Engines. Here I found that it meets API SJ !!! http://maslotrade.com/downloads/mobil-1-racing-4t.pdf

This oil is available in Europe and actually has quite a good price (6.88€/L)

What do you think, Mobil 1 Racing 4T 15w50 or Motul 300v 15w50?
(6.88€/L vs. 11.45€/L)

I would go for the Motul. If it were more readily available here in CA I would probably use it.

John McM, 10w40 I guess is good for the NZ weather, but here is hotter so it would bennefit with the Mobil 1 Racing 4T 15w50

Parman, the Motul is almost double the price and to me the Mobil 1 Racing 4T looks good...

Anyone else with experiences on Mobil 1 Racing 4T?

Why no one uses 5w40 as specified from Porsche in the OEM manual?

I use 5w40 Castrol, no issue, no consumption, no leaks

FYI, here's a somewhat dated specsheet on Mobil oils

Mobil_1_Product_Guide.pdf

The 5/50 seems like it might work. I use 15/50 as its formulated specifically for flat tappet valve trains.

Would be good to see similar spec sheets from other manufacturers

Also, I change my oil every Spring to flush water out of tank that inevitably accumulates over Winter.

Other interesting oil story. I installed a MaxJax lift. Now, I said to myself, oil changes should be a breeze. Turns out, the right, rear arm on the MaxJax sits directly beneath the tank drain. I've got to plug the gap in the arm extension to keep oil from flowing up inside arm and then dripping for months afterwards.

A spotless oil change is an illusive thing.

"freno a mano" because the 5w40 that Porsche recommended back in the day has completely different ZDDP formulation than the current one. Also, I just learnt that the recomended oil by Porsche for "classics" up to the 993, included, is a 10w60! http://www.porsche.com/international.../motoroil-faq/

dlpalumbo, yes the 15/50 has the highest level of ZDDP for automotive. Here you can see that Mobile 1 Racing 4T has about 1700 ppm of Zn

ok thank you.

I don't know castrol ZDDP formulation. Can this oil make damage?
Porsche shops continue to use modern oil like 5w30 and 5w40 on 964 and 993 engines....

I have read posts with pictures of pitted rocker arms and cam lobes attributed to use of oil with low levels of zddp. All manufacturers lowered zinc levels because hydraulic tappets allowed lower levels and the lower levels are environmentally acceptable.

So what should you do? I suspect that damage occurs at consistent high temperatures and RPM as you would find in racing. You might be safe if you dont track your car. But I decided that it wasn't worth it.

I did try a lower viscosity oil with good zddp levels (cant recall which) and found winter starting was noticeably easier compared to 15/50. But my car is garaged and never that cold so I went back to 15/50.

Bottom line is to check your oil's spec sheet and compare levels with oils recommended above.
