you've already seen the photos of my shattered fan. A new alternator is on it's way. I'm thinking about powder coating the fan and it's shroud. What the hell, I'm going broke anyway! Anyone got any been-there-done-that advice? Better yet, let's hear some cool ideas for dressing that baby up!

Seriously...we found out recently that some fans appear to be coated already...kind of magnolia colour! John Boggiano's is painted Red (like his car). Depends on what the new fan comes like then.

If the new fan's not painted already, then white may look OK, bearing in mind your car, but the fan does draw quite a bit of dirt through the lid. Black maybe?

If you see me with a "Type R" sticker on my car - or a big 3" fart-cannon exhaust, shoot first - ask questions later and the write a rice citation post-mortem!

I'm thinking about a black shroud and a red fan. Yeah, it will get dirty but I do manage to clean frequently. I back the car up on ramps every other washing to spray a little degreaser on the motor. (how **** is that?)

I'm still waiting on prices and may decide to go for it if the prices aren't over the top.

Though I am the issuer of the 'rice citation' - I think yellow to match the oil filler cap would be acceptable.

Neon lighting in th engine bay, however, is another matter.....................

I went with orange so that I could find the pieces easier when my new alternator feels the need to seize. I sprayed it with paint meant for brake calipers...you can find it in any auto shop.

I like that idea - hell of a lot cheaper than powder coating!
How's it holding up? Is it getting beat up and chipped?

I'm not impressed with the powder coating process in general. Once it gets scratched thru the surface it bubbles and peels, and you can't touch it up. With paint, touch up is possible.
The leading edge of some blades are nicked and chipped in small areas but other than that it looks good after 2K in miles.

I think I gained approx. 2hp at the wheels by going with the orange color by the way......red adds the most at 3hp, while blue actually subtracts from the net hp....something to do with colormetric quatuum physics, but I wouldn't know, I'm just a satisfied end user.

Quick question...what's the process for removing the fan? I replaced my belts recently, and despite removing the pulleys etc,and with nothing else apparently holding the fan in place, it appeared to be fairly secure. What did I miss?

You need to get one of the bearings in your alternator to seize, then rev the engine to about 6,000 - that'll get that pesky fan out of the engine bay!

Terry...that sounds fairly easy...don't even have to open the engine cover. However, is there an easier way that involves spanners?

The problem with actually having your fan powder coated is that "globules" of powder coating seem to upset the balance of the blades, etc.

...your fan WILL get "globules" on the blades!

I will powdercoat the fan housing, but had my fan blade painted GP White to match the exterior...adds a nice touch to engine bay asthetics.
