Default odometer tempering

Hello,
I'm just wondering if there is a good way to check if a 964's odometer has been tempered with. Since it's using an anolog gauge, i figure unscrupulous sellers might roll back some numbers to inflate the price. Thanks.

A bit basic but, if you pull it out and look at the screws in the back of it, they should have dabs of 'tamper evident' paint on them. Easy to disguise, but maybe they wouldn't bother to do so and leave you with an obvious sign.

If the odometer is wound back you will see the numbers no longer line up properly. Tamper seals and paint also provide clues.

No - only the tenths are in constant motion - surely you don't go so fast that they all are?!

If a digit has another digit to its right that isn't a '9', then that digit should line up perfectly straight against those to its left.

Did that make any sense?

Delhi, Not sure where your located, but here in the States you can run a Car Fax (carfax.com)( Nothing to to do w/ them) and most times Odometer readings are shown for each registration, emission tests! If you see 40K in '96, 56K in'97 then 37K in '98........somethings up!

Just to clairify, I have noticed many 911's where the numbers don't line up perfectly when it is next to a "9"- this appears to be normal, but if the numbers really didn't line up by a lot, or if they looked crooked next to say a "3" or a "5" or something, then something might be fishy/suspect. You can never be sure, but with Carfax in the US, and other types of car background checks, plus any records with the car, and general wear of the interior, you can get a better idea.

Its not a perfect definitive answer, but you can check the seats and pedals for what appears to be excessive wear for a given mileage.

Good luck with it!

I've been told that on earlier 911's one could fit a switch on the central tunnel(?) which turned the odometer on/off! Not sure if it's possible on 964.

Dear Piers,
The odometer is driven from a gear system within the speedo itself. You are thinking of disconnecting the speedo signal itself from the transmission. Firstly of course this can only be done on 1989 and 1990 models and if you do this other things will not work like your rear spoiler system, cruise control if fitted, heating and aircon system etc,
Ciao,
Adrian

Hi Adrian

Er.......to clarify, I'm not 'thinking' of doing anything. Just wanting to warn people of possible dodgyness out there!

As I thought it would appear to be a pre-964 issue.

Brgds
Piers
