Getting wheels refinished, any tips or horror stories I should know?
I'm picking up a set of Cup 2 wheels for use on my 964 C2 and was planning to get them refinished since they have some wear. I haven't ever had a wheel refinished and am looking for advice. Is there anything I should know or look for when it comes to refinishing?
A few questions I have:
Should the wheels be media blasted prior to paint?
I would assume the wheels would get a clear coat?
Any special paint code to use to match the stock grey color?
What's the average going rate for this type of work?
Get in touch with your local PCA chapter and ask who they recommend.
Should the wheels be media blasted prior to paint? - always good to strip the paint fully, but it's pricier, most shops just sand them down and paint.
I would assume the wheels would get a clear coat? - yep.
Any special paint code to use to match the stock grey color? - 61M for 1992-1996 cars.
What's the average going rate for this type of work? - $80-200 per wheel. Lots of variables.
Not a fan of Cup 2's on 964's. Cup 1's best choice; other good 17" choices are Fikse FM5 or FM10, 996 10 Spoke, Sport Classics and BBS LM's.
I'm getting a good deal on them so they are most likely going to be temporary until I find a set of Cup 1s. I already have some 996 twists for my track wheels.

Great info. Thanks Ilko! Can you recommend anyone in NY (preferably in the $80 range if the work is good )
I've had wheels shipped to Wheel Collision in Bath, PA in the past. They came out quite good. I've also used DunnSport in the Bronx, they have a quick turnaround and their work is quite decent. Prices are also good. But lately I've just left wheels with my mechanic Irek at CIM Motorsport. He has a guy who does the work for him and I've been very pleased with the results!
Just powder coated my D90 wheels gloss black to have as a back up set and they turned out great. Find a good powder coat facility nearby or check near west palm. Paint can flake and scratch easily etc.

for those near NYC they do ship all over the country as well. Larry from AMMO did his cup 1 wheels there and there's a youtube video on the process.
