Indulge me with these naive questions;

Borrowing photo below from an article on PP;

A) what does the end of the dial gauge rest on exactly when going through the manuals instructions for cam timing, says spring seat? Where in pic is spring seat?

B) what does valve closed, with appx. 10 mm preload mean?

C) should i be expecting dial gauge to read near 1.26mm at crank TDC?

Next time chain covers, valve covers off I want to check cam timing on stock setup without really going through cam timing.. What would gauge values be left and right (#1 & #4), anybody care to speculate ?

The tip of the dial gauge is resting on the valve spring retainer, the preload refers to the dial gauge, the plunger should have a preload of at least 10mm, not really all that important, as long as it's preloaded more than what the valve moves at TDC. The cam timing is very much dependent on which cams you are using, the 1.26mm sound like the setting for a stock 964 cam IIRC.
Hope this helps.
is a good video to watch, not a 964, but you get the idea.

Preload dial, lock in zblock, zero gauge.....

Dial on spring retainer, measures spring compression (valve travel) as crank travels 360 degrees each cam....

Do I have it right?

Thanks!
