is there a way to tell if a car is a 2 or a 4 from the VIN?

it is a 1991...

a friend just told me that there is nothing to indicate 2 or 4 in the VIN...i was wondering, short of climbing under (there's an oxymoron for you) the car and just looking...

It would be easier to get a pic of the switch panel just forward of the shifter (1 switch on the C2 vs. 2 switches on the C4) or the rear brakes (2-piston on C2 vs. 4-piston on the C4)

Burning Brakes
Late C2's also had 4 pot rear calipers so not fool proof...
Easiest way is the diff lock dial on the centre console as advised earlier.
Plus you should get an all wheel drive warning light come on when turning the ignition, should go out once the engines started.
Another identifier is the ABS ECU in the frunk, C4's have a blue label as they also control the all wheel drive, C2's are a pinky coloured label.
Other than climbing underneath, that about it...
