Default Rear indicator unit

Hi,

I am based in Tokyo & have a '91 C2 RHD.

The rear brake light bulb & indicator bulb kept blowing.......brought the car to official dealer here & said I needed to replace the complete rear indicator unit - cost U$ 250! (left side only) said I will need to replace the other soon.

I usually get my parts from the US & have them fitted by the Mechanic & was hoping to to the same with the right side unit that will need replacing but the dealer said that rear lenses are different & will have to get them from Japan. Think the part number for right side is 96463190800 & have seen them on design 911 for half the price as I paid for left hand side unit.

Q: Is this correct? Is there differences between US / Europend / ROW cars on the rear lenses & connections?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Derek

Derek,

I replaced both rear indicator clusters on my RHD '93 Turbo 3.6 [cosmetic change] and they're theoretically the same as your clusters going by the new part number. They were USD 250 each, so your price is right.

The part numbers for the new ones based on the boxes are 964.631.908.00, but I can see nothing that indicates the distinction between left and right.

FWIW: The old indicators are part numbers 964.631.404.00 [right] and 964.631.403.00 [left].

If you get stuck I can take photos of the old ones to help [I kept them just in case].

Checked Pelican and they list the US version as M-631-907-01 [Left] and M-631-908-01 [right]. Both cost USD 182.50

Unfortunately it's difficult to tell from their photo what difference there is between the US version and mine, as they only show the front. I note that they have slot cut into the rear [unseen] flange and my original ones are solid, but cant see any other difference.

Thanks for your reply John.

I have just sent a mail to Paragon Products whom I have ordered parts in the past from to see if any difference. I have noticed US suppliers who sell EURO & US lenses.......i'll l'll let u know if I hear anything.

btw - design911.co.uk have them for GBP 92, thought they would have been cheaper in the US though.

I had this problem some time back. After replacing the bulb about 4 times in 2 weeks, the electrician finally replaced the bulb with a small sized bulb with same wattage. Apparently the bulb was touching the lens and the vibration kept buring out the filament.

It's been 2 months now with the small bulbs and they are still going strong. So my suggestion is to try this and check if the bulb is held in place properly before plonking down the big money for new lenses.

That's what happended to mine, i'll try replacing with smaller bulbs. Thanks for that.

With the new left lense my right looks a little tired & off colour so I think I will be replacing it shortly anyway.

Is it worth replacing the bulbs in the new lense with smaller ones?

If its touching it's gonna blow, so check if it is. Anyway bulbs are cheap
