Odd sound...any ideas?
After my complete cylinder & head update on 91' C2, I have a new sound.
It is a squeal, simillar to a belt squeal. It comes from the bottom side of the engine though. Can't really hear it from the top at all. Not really the middle, but heard on both sides of the bottom. I don't hear it while while listening at the rear during idle. I have to rev the rpm a little, then just as the engine is settles back into idle it squeals. The rpm of the squeal does not sound very fast (not 700 rpm), but mush slower.
Any ideas?
Thanks:

This sounds eerily familiar to what happened to Surf Twang earlier. A quote from one of his posts:
"Immediately after the 60k service I noticed a high pitched whining noise that I didn't pay much attention to because the Ferrari's I owned in the past also made this kind of noise."
Ended up that he broke the shaft of his alternator, perhaps due to belts being too tight.
Here is the thread: Interesting reading.

It turns out I still have a high-pitched whine even after the repair (new alternator, shaft, belts, etc.).
The berings in the tensioners on the belts can freeze and they make a squeking noise when they do. When it happened to mine it was on the left side. But you should be able to hear it from top if that was the problem.

Well,
I had my wife sit in the car and rev it up to about 2500 rpm, then let off the accelerator while I was under it trying to pinpoint the noise.
If you think these cars are loud standing away from it, try crawling underneath.
The sound was too far toward the middle of the car for me to squeeze to. It seems like it's coming from the front of the engine where the transmission (tiptronic) joins.

I don't want to be an alarmist, but failure mode for a torque converter is often signaled by a high pitched whine... However, usually you hear it as the motor revs up as well and not just at idle...and failure is rare. How do I know...I had a Sportomatic in the now distant past!!!
On the other hand, power steering pump noises can seem to come from that area...
