Default Finally found a shift ****

Hello,

Okay, I am going crazy.....After months of trying to find the appropriate **** to replace my stock shift ****/boot. I finally got it. Seems all the "good" factory replacements are SIX speed *****.

So what does one do....

Bought an aluminum and light wood **** (I know, I don't usually like wood either) from a 996. Has the crest at the base, real classy.

Took a dremel (yes it HURT) to the the clear resin covering the shift pattern and removed the "6" then applied new resin. Looks awesome IMHO.

Gonna switch over my stock cashmere boot. So now I have a 996 radio, cd changer, shifter and steering wheel. And I don't even like the 996

Will post pics as soon as the resin fully dries!

You win the prize for bravery in the refurbishing of a 964 interior - 2003 class..........taking a dremel to anything in my hands spells expensive disaster

Looks better in person, the spot where the "6" was has a strange grain around it.

Guy, I can't believe you achieved such a superb result!

Well done!

That's craftmanship.

Sadly, from the picture, it seems the rest of your interior is, shall we say, a little on the untidy side.

Thanks for the complements

It actually came out better than expected. I used the dremel like a dental drill and ground away the resin over the "6". It is pretty thick resin, not quite a 1/4 inch. I feathered it out and then used a sanding disk on the dremel to smooth out all the rough edges. Then repeatedly buffed with a small buffer wheel and 3M rubbing compound. Once this way done it was clear again but had a huge divit in the resin. I then added new liquid resin which filled the void and self leveled over the entire shift pattern to the very edges. You can now look thru it like glass, no signs of the surgery.

Only took me about an hour from start to finish. The hardest part was first hitting that NEW **** with the 35,000 rpm dremel. Boy did I question my judgement when the pieces started flying

You probably could also do this to the new carbon fiber/aluminum ****

Will post pics of the completed interior shortly, I am waiting for a few more small items.....

Looks really impressive. Look forward to seeing the interior pix. Now you have to tidy your workbench... ;-)

Amazing we got this far without some comment about the use of the words grinding and **** in the same sentence. Guess the UK contingent are too busy enjoying the sunshine

Cheers

Now that would be hard to get the '6' off!

Then you'd just have to follow Randall G's route and install a 6 speed box I guess

......or reuse the 5 speed insert from the original **** - which I guess is the cheaper (if not more fun) route.

There you go Guy - why didn't you just swap gearboxes?

Absolutely beautiful! Great job.

How hard was it to retrofit the 996 steering wheel?
