Newb diving in, needs an engine....where should I start looking?
I have a line on an 89 C4 coupe BLK/BLK available but it has no engine. PO swapped it into his vehicle leaving the donor with my guru. It's been tucked away so I finally asked about it. The rear pass side was hit. Anyway after fixing the body gonna need an engine. Where should I start to make this a fun project car for my son and me to wrench on and drive the **** out of? Tranny is also in good shape and still there too.
I guess you have 4 main options:
964 3.6 engine
993 3.6 non vram engine
993 3.6 vram engine
993 3.6 tt engine
The last 3 will require loom, oil and fuel line changes to make things fit.
If you buy an engine try to get the following:
Engine (of course)
Clutch and flywheel (might save you some $$ if they are usable)
Engine to chassis loom (goes from engine to under left hand front seat)
ECU (plugs into the loom under the seat)
Exhaust (more useful on a 964 lump but some of the 993 bits are reusable)
Most of all try to buy an engine with the right story from an honest seller - yes the engine on a pallet at the local breakers might be a few $k cheaper but may also have been to the moon and back.
Located in TX, and am wondering if there are reputable sources for 964 engines. No 993. Please no 993. Of course Google is my friend. Who are the go to engine guys?
