Default New 964 Owner looking for Exhaust System assistance

Hi All,

I recently picked up a 89 964 C4 and I am looking for a little help. The car I bought has a custom exhaust on it which appears to just be a straight pipe in place of the primary muffler with the tip attached directly to it (i.e. no secondary). It is welded to the head exchanger pipe with a stand off to hold it in place. This setup is much to loud for me and I also think having it direct welded causes the engine to feel rougher than it actually is.

1) Does anyone have a picture of how the stock primary muffler is mounted? I understand it uses some straps but I'm not sure how they attach to the car.

2) Since I need to buy a primary muffler, hangers, g-pipe/secondary muffler and new tip would I be better off getting something like the Fabspeed Maxflo muffer or should I try and source the original parts. I would just like a nice streetable exhaust.

3) If I should get the stock parts, anyone know of some good places to look? I see some stuff on ebay but most won't ship to Canada.

Thanks

Check out THIS page, you will find everything you need to buy. These people will ship to Canada, I have bought from them on a couple occasions. I would NOT buy anything Fabspeed, done that been there, unless you are willing to live with an unbearable DRONE at cruising speed.
I run cat bypass, cup pipe (primary bypass) and secondary muffler, really like the sound. You can also go cat bypass, primary muffler and G-pipe, tried that but prefer the first set-up.

I am sorry you had a bad experience with one of our products. What specifically did you buy that was causing the undesirable drone?

ChaoticBliss: I would be happy to help you get a more subtle exhaust system fitted to your car, please feel free to shoot me a PM if you would like to discuss different possible options. We also ship to Canada on a daily basis.

I have a Fabspeed muffler and also experienced a bad drone between 2500 and 4000 RPM when using the dual exhaust setup. I cut a 2 1/2" circle out of SS and rigged it up so it partially blocks the driver's side exhaust. It mounts inside of the pipe in such a way that I can position it from fully closed off to about 30 degrees open. It is set around 30 degrees for the street just to provide enough backpressure to cancel out the DRONE, and it is fully removeable when I track the car.

Thanks for that link. Looks like a good site. I'm still a little confused as to which mounting parts I need and how they go together so hopefully I can figure it out when I get the parts.

There is a bracket that bolts in, and then the straps that go around the primary muffler attach to that bracket. I'm on phone so I can't give you the part numbers on hand, but also check out the pelicanparts tech article (no affiliation)

I bought your RSR header muffler kit a few years back, this was before you redesigned it, so it would actually fit. I thought it very poor business practice to sell a kit for a 964, when you had never really test fitted it on the car, this is what Alex told me at the time, when I complained about the fit. In top of the unacceptable build quality, there was also this loud drone in the 2600-3800 rpm range that wanted me to wear ear plugs when driving the car.
I returned the system for a refund, which I did receive after a long wait, but by the time the smoke settled, I was out about $600.00. As you can tell, I am not very impressed with Fabspeed products or business practices.

Click the link and go to "Exhaust system". Click on first pic at the top left. You need 2 brackets:
Part # 2
Part # 13
Then you need 2 spacers for bracket #13, they are #14/14a and the 2 bolts, but you can buy those at the hardware store 8x75 m/m.
The primary muffler is held on by 2 straps, #11. It also has 2 plates welded on the backside that rest on bracket #2.
The secondary muffler is held in place with bracket #13 on one end, and part # 6 and 7 on the other end (primary muffler)
The left side of the primary is held together with the cat using parts # 6 and 7.
To make it complete, you will need the tail pipe, part # 19 and #6 and 7.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I think I get the primary muffler now - the clamps wrap around the muffler and around the back of the bracket (#2 from diagram)?

For the secondary muffler, what does the #13 bracket attach to? This a picture of that location on my car. I don't see anything obvious that it would bolt into. Am I missing something?

Sorry for all the questions, the help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That bracket bolts to the front of the engine where the power steering pump drive is. If you look you will see 2 holes in the cover for the drive, that is where the spacers go and the bolt through the bracket, through the spacers and then screw into the engine.
Come to think of it, maybe only one bolt through the cover, anyway you will see when you get the bracket up there.

It could be the picture, or I think someone might have removed the bracket for the secondary muffler.

Reach in behind the engine tin to the front of the motor, you will either find a 13mm bolt (I think that's the bolt head size) or you will find a hole where the bolt should be. Alex is right, someone took off the secondary muffler bracket.

It's going to be a bitch to get the bracket back on without moving things, but should be able to do it.
