Great write up Frank

The only point I'd put an asterisk next to is, "Just keep going until something breaks"

*Assuming you are doing routine maintenance and checking for things that, if they break, will have catastrophic (and expensive!) consequences. I learnt this lesson many moons ago when I ignored the tappety noise coming from my Opel Calibra turbo. It was a sign that the timing belt was worn (100,000km or so on the odo). It eventually broke and bent all the valves in the process. A simple fix became a major one. So don't ignore the warning signs!

I'd also emphasise the bit about synergy - parts that don't compliment each other will give sub-optimal results where the total gain is less than the sum of the parts.

Nice advice, a very rational and reasonable point of view.

I particularly like your comment "Don’t go and have a compression test on your engine if you are happy with how she pulls."
I've been wanting to get a compression test on my new to me 964 since I bought it but am concerned that less than perfect figures will sit in the back of my OCD head and ruin the driving experience until something is done about it.
The car drives fantastically and pulls really hard, I'm happy with knowing that!

Now that's a great post Black-Betty!!
Mine pulls very well, sounds fantastic, leaks a few drops, a little post-drive smell....
Had a service a few months ago, my mechanic said the best thing you can do to keep it up is 'Just Drive it'!
