Default UK - European breakdown cover

A lot of insurance companies now include this cover (upto 90days) as part of your policy, but how good is it?

Do you guys just trust that this 'free' service will be adequate or do you always take out your own policy?

Reason I ask is that with Classic Lemans coming up I thought I'd read the small print of the cover provided by my current insurer, Lockton. They use 'Call Assist' which on the whole sounded reasonable until I read the bit under exclusions where they would NOT respond to a breakdown which occurs within the first 48hrs of you leaving the UK. That sounds pretty harsh and the most likely time a break down would occur (tonking down a french motorway).

Being an AA member, I've always just added on Euro cover on a per trip basis as and when needed. This can work out quite expensive if you end up hopping over the channel 3-4 times a year.

So, take out your own policy or trust the insurance freebie service ?

I always used to get the Euro AA cover when I lived in the UK for peace of mind.

Look forward to seeing your car at Le Mans!

Worth also checking the free cover applies for cars > 10 years old. I've just taken EU RAC cover out and found the age of the car had a big impact on the cost (if > 10 years old).

This is a good point. I'm an AA member for my UK cover mostly because they will come to a break down at a track day (mechanical, not crash induced). However, when I looked at buying extra cover for a Euro trip, the 964 would be too old for them to cover. So, each year I take out euro cover with my insurer...about 40 quid extra on my premium.

I use ADAC. German breakdown company

You need to check but I think they will cover you all year even though you live in the UK
