Default Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

So all,

I've pulled the trigger on some new wheels.
8Jx18, ET50
10Jx18, ET52

I didn't want to hijack the new Great wheels for sale thread anymore so I thought I'd ask the question here. I done quite alot of searching but couldn't really find the answer to all my questions. So I'm planning to get some Yokohama AD08 in sizes
225/40 & 265/35. So my question is two fold. I think the fronts shouldn't need any spacers but the rears needs a 5mm to achieve the sweet spot offset 47.

My rear arches wings are being painted very soon. Should I get the arches rolled now before paint or doesn't it matter or in not at all. There seem to be many conflicting view points on whether it is necessary. My car is not really what you'd call slammed. Its probably RS height(ish) and I'm happy with the current ride height, so here's my other question should I raise my suspension (i've got Bilstein Pss10s) a bit to keep to get the same arch clearance and ride height and would this have an adverse effect on the handling? ( I'm guessing yes as the CoG would be raised)

As you can probably tell I'm having an issue figuring out this whole 17 - 18 inch modification.
The attached shots show the current stance/height.

I think you should be fine with the ride height right where its at to be honest, the 265/35 should be right at home with no arch modifications but the cars differ here and there. I havent modified my arches at all and have run 285/30 out back without issue. If you have the option to roll them now before paint it would be some cheap insurance to do so.

dont want to foul your thread with an example pic so heres a link to mine with 18x8 et 50 225/35 and 18x10 et 47 with 285/30 http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/h...t/964RS015.jpg

I was on RS spec bilsteins with this setup and maybe a little lower than RS ride height but not too much.

My car is lower than yours. I run a 10et47 and a 265/35 tire with no issue and no rolled fenders. So I think you should be good without having to raise your car up. If I'm not mistaken, a 285/30 tire is shorter in diameter but wider than a 265/35.

If you do decide to roll the arches it's better to do so before paint to save any potential headaches.

I would get the arches rolled before paint then you have future flexibility...what wheels have you gone for or is it a secret (and will they be orange!)?

You'll be fine. And in the event that they rub just give yourself a little more negative camber.

I agree with the above. Have the arches done since you're painting them anyway - any body shop should be able to do this for you pre paint.

I'd have then folded flat instead of rolled if you're gonna paint them after. You'll get more clearance and less grime getting in there...

And just to over answer and possibly state the obvious. When rolling arch lips after paint you run the risk of the paint cracking. Especially if the paint is old as it'll have less flexibility. If the paint is new there's less chance of it cracking. The trick is to apply heat to the lips so the paint is less likely to crack when rolled.

Anyway! What wheels did you go for!

Hey Mike,

I run 17" Cup1s and tmy fronts are 225s.. and they rub very slightly on full lock with 5mm spacers.. not sure if this is because the fronts on the 7" rims are right on the limit of width and this pushes them out further.. there is also quite a wide variation on actual width of tyre sizes between manufactures. Mine are Yokahoma AD08s

So after checking out way too many wheels I was working myself up about buying the wrong ones. I very nearly order a set of 15/52 outlaws. Then I though about it and one thing that kept on coming back was that I really like cups. The five spoke is simple and very easy to maintain and keep clean so I decided to look at the variations on the theme. I love the look of the 18" and the way they fill the arches so that was a given. The Veloces looked great but I knew I get all toothbrushy on those bolts around the rim so I ditched that plan. I then started searching for Rufs, Techart formulas, but they were quite difficult to track down. So my global ebay search found me a set of Gemballa LeMans. Perfect (i hope) 5 spoke, deep dished, good offsets and period correct. No idea about weight but they can't weigh more than my cups 1 reps. So now just waiting for the m to come from Germany and I'll bolt them on with a set of fresh AD08s. This does of course mean that my 'Starburst' orange Cup 1 reps with ad08s will be up for sale on the wheel thread shortly.

Only question now is Do I get the spokes all orangey and leave the rims shiny..

Oooo always liked these a lot. Run them silver to give yourself time to have a think about it, then go orange with a polished lip!

I personally like 18s on our cars. I find they increased side wall stability and therefore made the car feel more direct. I'll be interested to read your thoughts.

Congrats on a gorgeous new set!

Nice new rims Mike.

Go Orange and Silver, but run them in Silver to start with.

I know this is a rare 18" cup 1, but you could do the same:

G60pops you read my mind. That's exactly the plan. I think it looks good leaving the rim clear and paint the spokes. I will post up pictures as soon as they are on the car. Checked out the price for new tyres...Not impressed...AD08s are expensive again. They seem to go up and down in price quite a lot like a commodity. Cheapest I can find them is Camskill
225/40/18 - £151.43
265/35/18 - £224.10

These are the only track/road tyres I know, has anyone got any major competitors or recommendations?
