Angry Boxster vs 964 C4

I went for a great drive down to the New Forest yesterday and, apart from enjoying the beach, and great weather, I had a good play with a couple of other Porsche's (2 boxters, & a 996S. One in particular was a 2.7 Boxster. We both gunned it down the slip road onto the Motorway. Whilst I managed to keep up with him OK, was suprised to find that the either my car was slower or his car was faster than normal.

On testing with Piers' G-Tech gizmo over Xmas, I managed to get 0-60 in 5.6secs, so I think my engine is OK. Anyone else had trouble keeping up with these before, or is it just my driving?!

Hi Andy Roe,

My pal has just taken delivery of his new Boxster, even though I told him not to. I'm going to give him a pasting as soon as he's run it in. I'll let you know by how much he gets beaten.
Cheers,

Dave

I've had 2.7L Boxsters to keep on several occassions, and no way are they quicker in a straight line than a 964. Better handling, yes, but not more power.

Nice place to do it 'though.

Yes it's yet another place we've been on holiday!

There was a bloke in Porsche Post a couple of months ago who owns a Boxster but hired a 964 C2. Even he admitted the C2 was much quicker.

Okay, the Factory 0-62 mph numbers are:

6.4 sec., Boxster 2.7
5.7 sec., Boxster S 3.2
5.7 sec., 964

Only once have I been passed at the track by a Boxster. It was a 2.7 on racing slicks piloted by one hellaciously talented driver. The rest were not too difficult to get by.

I'm afraid the difference was driver.

Yes, we can't have you running around unprepared for such challenges. A few track sessions with some qualified instruction should get you up to snuff in short order.
Enjoy and be safe!

Boxsters have wonderful torque and suprisingly useful power. Where was he in the revs when he "hit it"? Where were you? Was this a true straight? ..or were you coming out of any curves? Did you both start from a dead stop? At the same spot? At the exact same time?

There are a dozen possible reasons why he "bested" you. 0-60 times only tell part of the story. Yes, the C2 and C4 SHOULD be quicker, but don't discount the lovely Boxster!

Exactly, I recently came up behind a guy in C220 diesel merc! and was just about to over take him when he hit the gas. I was in 4th at about 60 and was just going to stroll past when he started pulling away from me. I dropped it into 3rd and floored it but he was already a few car lengths away by then. Of course I flew past but I'm sure he was down the pub that night telling everyone how his merc blew off a 911!!!
Don't quote me on the actual gears/figures as I'm not sure but it illustartes a point.

Richard 1990 C2

P.S. Andy, we spend most weekends down at Lymington (yatch Haven) a bit more sedately though - sailing. I must say that some of the power boats that come into refuel sound fantastic (no silencers there) also 225bhp outboards look very cool!!

Richard, I had a very similar experience last year in France, also with a C220 (estate).

We were looking for a restaurant and asked the locals if they knew any. One very kind guy offered to escort us there. So he hops into the Merc and off we go. In town all was fine, but as soon as we were out he just guns it, much to our surprise. Keeping in mind these were single track country lanes, all bumps and curves, there was absolutely no way I could keep up with him!

My friend and I were just laughing our heads off as we were amazed how quick the Merc was and how he must be having the time of his life (it has been a sleepy Saturday afternoon up to then) leaving us behind in every corner.
