Riccardo

There must be something wrong. I kept up comfortably with a 320SLK several weeks ago.

Having said that, I couldn't pull away from a 996 on the motorway the other day, but he couldn't get past until 125mph, at which point I was willing to concede anyway.

p.s. I am not under the delusion that my car can keep up with the 996, but my point is that reaction times can be key.

Christer, you wouldn't have been to keep up either... it was all about knowing the roads; he knew them like the back of his hand, I had never been there before. Add to that a certain overcaution from me at not wanting to get carried away (easily done when driving with another petrolhead friend) and the fact I still wasn't at one with 964 handling and that explains why the Merc dissapeared.

At one point he overcooked a tight 90 degree turn and had to really plonk on the brakes. Had I been keeping up too close, I would have probably lost the rear end and plowed straight into him!

I don't think that road knowledge seemed to be the point of your previous post. All the same, I think you would find that now you have more experience with the 964 that the situation would be totally different regardless of road knowledge.

You're right Christer, I didn't make that clear in my original post. Would definitely be better if I met him again....

why exactly wouldn't you be able to keep up with a 996 or actually leave it in the dust? I mean it has the same amount of horses, i'm pretty sure the 964 is lighter in weight, and the 964 has a superior engine.. in my opinion :| watercooled systems suck!

i think the dry weight of a 996 is 1320kgs dry so it is actually lighter than most964's, plus it has 70 horsepower more. My car because of low options and some minor mods etc. weighs 1348kgs with all the oil and half a tank of gas in it so is probably marginally lighter than a 996.

Where do you get your facts?

Hi Cyun,
I've had a couple of 'tear ups' with 996's. I've got a few pals who drive them and its the same story every time. The 964 comfortably outpaces the 996 up until about 80 or 90mph and then its longer legs help it peel past very quickly. I always say to myself its stupid racing at these speeds whenever it happens and pretend that I wasn't racing anyway.
Cheers,
Dave

Cool

I've had a Boxster S (3.2) on loan for the last 3 weeks as some "kind soul" rear-ended me a month ago at a set of lights.
My opinion regarding a Boxster has changed I must admit! Before I got the car I was allergic to them!! (as it's not a "real" Porsche!!) But I must say they do go nicely and handle MUCH better than a 964 thanks to the mid-engine. It's an easier car to drive fast (over 110 MPH) for longer distances than a 964. I would say the 964 is more aggressive but the Boxster more refined. The 964 is more “punchier” in the gears than the Boxster.

The Boxster is not a bad entry level Porsche. But I am starting to miss my 964!!

Cheers

Gary, sorry to hear about your mishap with the 964, I hadn't heard about it before. Hope the 964 will come back like new...

Thanks Riccardo,
Yip I wasn't a happy camper!! after the incident but what can you do!! It was a plumber in a white Ford Transit with Metal bumpers that took me out!! not a pretty sight!!

The irritating thing is that I have to re-Zymol my car when it comes back from the OPC!!

Cheers
Gary
