Why is the 3.2 louder than the 964, from inside?

Why is the 3.2 louder than the 964, from inside?
What makes the engine noise quieter inside the cabin of a 964 compared to a 3.2 Carrera? I used to have a 3.2 Carrera where you could hear the throb of the engine through the rear bulkhead, even at light throttle - this was with the standard exhaust. I now have a 964 with a G-pipe and I can barely hear the engine unless I'm giving it the beans...
From what I can see, both models have similar sound insulation, on both sides of the bulkhead. So what else is different? Or is it that I'm a little older and deafer these days...?
The 3.2 used to really put a grin on my face with the throb - something the 964 lacks. I don't want to make the external noise louder by drilling the airbox etc, but I would like to get back that 3.2 rawness. Anyone got any ideas on this?

I agree. After a certain point a car can get too loud and you actually end up having to drive it slower so you don't look like you are speeding. Make it loud and direct on the inside, so you can enjoy it and not bother other people (too much).
Removing the engine sound pad is one easy step. It's usually the ugliest thing in a 964's engine bay anyway. Slight noise, and heat increase. My kids don't complain.
Also, stiffer motor and transmission mounts. Noise increases a little, but you also gain precision and that rawness you are looking for. Good NVH.
One last note. Popping the sunroof headliner out also dramatically increases the growl in the cabin too!

Simple as........engine mounts
The 3.2 has an RS style rubber mount whilst the 64 has
a hydraulic mount
The solution is to go to a solid or an rs engine mount.
I have the rs mount and am quite happy with it.
Have had a solid mount on a previous 64 and found it too much, but
perhaps this will work for you.
Another benefit is the rear feels more planted.
And.... many suggest strengthening the engine cradle when
changing to solid/rs mounts

Easiest and best solution I came up with, was cutting the outside section of the airbox to increase intake noise. There are a couple people who have done it, I would suggest searching for something along the lines of "modify airbox".
Something like this, and looks completely stock with the engine lid open.

Yep, sounds like the airbox would do it. If you're cruising it doesn't make a difference - only when you're on the gas.
I've tried several different ways with the airbox and they all caused a droning sound until I cut off the whole front off of it and removed the snorkel bit - like the cup cars.
Before you cut, remove the cover and use some duct tape to secure the filter in place and go for a drive. This way you'll be able to see if you like it first!

The whole 964 engine sounds different from the 3.2 - I miss the hair dryer whirrrng sound, but above 4k it really comes into its own.
One thing I've wondered, how come the 964 doesn't whistle like previous generations when upshifting at or near redline?

Interesting point there, 911Jetta and carrera, regarding the engine mounts - pair of RS mounts and a Rennline carrier reinforcement ordered
As I said in the beginning, I dont want to go louder externally, so airbox and exhaust enhancements are not on the cards. However, I am very tempted to get the ugly, as 911Jetta commented, engine-bay insulation out...
