Default Clunk

I am noticing a faint 'clunk' after shifting and then pressing the gas pedal. I find that if I slowly let the clutch out and slowly accelerate it does not do this. Sometimes after letting off the gas I hear it as well...
Any ideas as to cause? I am new to the 964 so maybe there is not an issue? It is not loud but I want to fix any problems...Thanks in advance!

I've no experienced this my self, but it sounds like you need to look at your engine and gearbox mounts.
If the are worn they will allow movement in the drive train which might be giving you the clunk as you change gear and accelerate.

Do you know if your flywheel has ever been replaced? How many miles are on the car? My '90 developed a clunk and it was the original flywheel starting to fail. I replaced it with an LUK flywheel and its been good since.

Good luck with the repair.

Agree on mounts; check the axles for play as well.

I had new wevo black mounts installed as well as a new oem transmission mount for good measure. Clunk still persists...I can also add that the clunk also occurs when I let off the throttle without any gear change but only in lower rpm. Being an 89 I dont think it had the same flywheel problem as was suggested? Correct me if I am wrong though! Thanks again for any suggestions!

I believe the 89 flywheel has that rubber center which I have read may break, causing a clunk sound. There are several threads here about it, and I'd say worth doing what investigation you can do related to that.

Sure sounds like a failed DMF to me.

I thought a DMF was not available on 89 since it's a C4 only year?

Sounds like a it could be a DMF. C2s were available in 89. Unlikely to be transmission at that mileage.

I guess either way, more investigation is necessary. Good luck 964surfer.

Thanks everyone for input. Couple things I found:
Bruce Andersons handbook says the DMF was first introduced in 1990. Also that the C2 variant first appeared in 1990 (although it seems like there were rear wheel 1989's that were the previous body style).
Total 911 article seems to agree with this. I did find the above link. Will post my findings! Thanks again!

Mine is a C2. First registered 1989. It had a DMF fitted.

If you run your engine turn your ignition off and listen for a rattle from the transmission that usually means your DMF is shagged.

I'll give it a try. Thanks! Interesting about the C2 variant!
