Spike, there are several historic threads on this subject. What I did and many others have done is to bypass both front airbags (and their warning lights) by using a "bridge plug". You can order it from Porsche, the part # is discussed in the previous discussions. You also need a non airbag horn adapter , the part # is also listed. Both parts are under $10 each so it is a pretty cheap conversion, after you buy the wheel and hub.

The Momo wheel from your Carrera 3.2 will not fit an airbag equipped 964. The steering shaft is a different size. I am not sure if you can get an adapter to suit. I recommend you obtain the correct Momo for the model you have.

Spikes, you are right, they must have been archived off. I checked my notes and here is a quick summary.

Parts needed:
Bridge Plug - 928.612.220.00
Horn Contact- 964.652.104.00
Momo Hub - 7004

You must disconnect battery for 30 minutes before messing with the existing airbag.

The Bridge Plug goes in the centre console. There is an access panel in the carpeting on the right side of the centre console. It is held there by two Phillips screws. Inside you will see a large connector with an Orange anti-tamper plate. Remove the plastic anti-tamper plate and disconnect. Insert the Bridge Plug. You have now disabled both airbags.

To remove the steering wheel there are some Torx screws at the back holding the airbag unit. I think they are T30, remove them and then the airbag. Remove steering wheel, as I remember it was a 24mm nut. One tip someone gave me. When pulling/yanking at the wheel make sure the steering lock is NOT engaged. You could damage or break it. Once the wheel is removed, there is a big nylon ring on the steering column spline with all the connectors. Disconnect and remove it as well. While you are there you might as well remove the top and bottom steering column covers as you have to carefully make the opening a little bigger to give clearance to the Momo hub. I used some sandpaper taped to a paint can but there are many ways to do this.

The horn contact goes in a little key shaped hole at about 1 o'clock on the column face. It just snaps in.

Put on the Momo hub and you should be good to go.

Most of these instructions are from memory , I did mine about a year ago but it should get you started in the right direction. Good luck

THANKS ADRIAN AND JOHN

JOHN:

the momo hub that you mention .....will this adapt my momo steering to 964 as adrian mentioned it would not fit.

the other parts ....are they porsche agents only?

my car is 1991 with driver only airbag....i think....i dont see "airbag" written on passenger side although there is the glove box underneath and nothing in the area where glove box used to be on pre 964 cars.

if i only have 1 air bag ...do i only need 1 blank out adaptor?

QUESTIONS...QUESTIONS

The Momo adapter is what fits on the steering column, the Momo wheel screws to the adapter via 6 or 8 screws. I took my Momo Corse wheel from my 911SC and installed it on my 964, which required a different Momo hub adapter.

The bridge plug is one way to easily avoid any warning lights indicating that there is a problem with the airbag system.
