Default Distributorless - coil per plug

Anybody know which coils are used/suitable for a setup like this?

I was just looking at the Singer engine bay, on their web site,
quite impressive they run distributorless...

Have a look at post #3 for details. I think they were $1400 last I checked. But that was some time ago.

OK ,

I asked Dave at Emeralds,
the first thing is you need to run an aftermarket ECU probably Motec does it as well if you prefer this system,
basically,
you get rid of the distributors and block the hole, you buy 2 special coil packs ( 6 plugs per packs)
depending on the design of your coil pack , you may have to mod the end of the HT leads so they fit into it, but that can be done,
and then you have to run some wires (4 wires for me) from the ECU to the 2 existing coils ;
forgot to say the signal come from the flywheel sensor witch is already plugged to the ECU

maybe some more info on that web site

Hi kos11-12, Thanks for the info and PM. I've used Emerald ecu's on a few previous car projects with good results. I'm not looking to embark on anything tho for a good while. If I ever do, it'll be motec as that is where I feel the majority knowledge resides with this engine. I was just wondering what actual coil packs people have used on the 964 engine to achieve the distributorless setup. I like to reasearch all kinds of stuff

The picture of the above coil pack is not a COP design... That appears to be a wasted spark unit. Wasted spark is the usual route taken when doing an ignition change on the aircooled motors, but keep in mind that it is quite different from a coil on plug system. Each "coil" as shown above is actually three separate coils. So when you purchase two units, you're actually getting six total coils. Each small coil within the unit fires two cylinders at the same time. One at TDC of compression, and one at TDC of exhaust. The spark fired on the exhaust stroke is "wasted" and is there to simplify the number of coils and ignition timing.

I set this system up on my car. Been running it now for over 3 years. Works great and have had no issues. Installed a new ECU to manage the coil packs and the VRAM.

thanks jstyer, I've successfully setup and used both systems on 4 cyclinder engines. Gus, this sounds interesting, care to share more details on the coils you used?

Yes exactly, two coil pack and wasted spark. Of coarse new bigger injectors and RS flywheel with no issues.

Yes, just about the same, but I threw in a Varioram for a little more torque and used a VEMS / MegaSquirt to run all. Installed larger injectors, light weight flywheel, BB headers & exhaust, electric steeering pump plus the Varioram system - all have added a nice increase in performance. And a lot of other modifications to the car as well.

Thanks for bringing this up;
I was going to get the Motec but at the end went for the Emerald system, I liked the idea that the ECU is design & built in doors (in UK) and they have an "accurate" AWD dino in doors, as mine is a C4, I have it for 6 years with no issues (apart for some screws going around due to some i___ts steeping on the ECU when repairing the sun roof... I found out a year later)

I am up for this mods and the electric steering pump,

I think my distributors are for sale ...soon and my steering pump

Was chatting to a chap on 911uk a while ago about his distributor-less setup and he used Vauxhall Omega 3.0 v6 coil packs with a DTA ECU.
