Unhappy Seized Alternator

The alternator seized on my car 2 days ago.A whining noise followed by the ABS light and alarm going on,and then a pall of blue smoke.Opened the lid and found the v belt boiling away on the innermost pully.
The worst is that I'm Porsche-less for at least a week while they try to rebuild or replace the darn thing!
It wasn't long ago that I was bragging how reliable the car was,and nothing ever whent wrong!
Driving my Dad's BMW520 now, closest thing to a barge in my opinion

Dear Arnold,
There are normally indications of such a failure before they get to this stage. A squeal or grinding from the rear, ABS warn light intermittantly coming. headlight dimming at idle. What did you see or was this unexpected?

Is it my imagination, or is this subject beginning to become a bit of a regular?
Don't seem to have noticed it cropping up until recently, and now they all seem to be at it!

Arnold

I had the same thing happen last August. The alternator had been whinning for a bit and I was told by a mechanic that I should change it. BUT NO! I was going to get every last minute out of the old one. After the 3 hours in the hot sun, and $150 tow job, well... I later did get the original alternator replacement rather than the updated version, 'cause I wanted to save the extra $100 bucks. Hmmmm.

Jerry...

Okay...sorry, that had to SUCK!! ...but you learned something from that, didn't you?

It just seems you tempted Fate and she slapped you in the face!

Yup, this happens from time to time, and not just on our Porsches...I had one seize up on my Chevy years ago...NOT FUN!
