So, to take the temperature difference into account, people could target the lower 1/2 of the measure area of the dip stick since with a little more heat the oil will expand slightly. Does that make sense or am I missing something.

I also think we are splitting hairs here, but that is what is fun about Rennlist...

Skip, you are right on the money. When I first got the car I followed Porsches recommendations to see what the difference would be, I.E. Set a benchmark, now I keep the level on my oil gauge between 1/4 and 1/2 way up and check the dipstick very rarely.

I go to halfway point. Do you hear the thermostat open? Do you hear the oil gurgling?

Sometimes I hear the oil gurgle, but every car is a bit different.

I check that the front oil cooler is warm and that tells me the thermostat has opened. If you want to sit and watch your oil temperature gauge it will rise to above the 194 mark and then when the thermostat opens the oil temps will drop and then even out just below the 194. When the temp drops after rising, that is when the cold oil in the front oil cooler becomes part of the flow of the oil system (thermostat opening).

I have the air scoops, so it is very easy to stick my hand through and touch the oil cooler to check the temperature. A couple screws would remove the fog lights or the side lights and you can reach through and confirm it is open.

The joys of Porsche ownership...Love It.

I am not sure about the dipstick part but with mine if the interior oil gauge is on the red mark I add half a quart or half that and it brings it up. My car seems to run cool also but am using 15/40 oil so it might take a bit more to get it heated. Hope this helps.
