Go out to your car, look under the rear fenders. Chances are the black tubes that add support to the rear bumper mounting bracket are rotten. On Shrek, the left side one's center third stayed in my hand when I grabbed it to pull myself from under the car. To add insult to injury, the rear mounting bolt broke in the welded nut while taking it out. No big deal, however, since the bumper was off, I could easily torque the nut off its puny spot welds.
The new tubes cost about 30$ each. I thought about making a pair myself, but by the time I would have sourced the correct diameter tube, flattened and drilled it, I would have been out more than that.
I drilled 2 small holes in each tube and sprayed cavity wax in them, since the ends are flattened and not water proof. After fitting them, I liberally coated them in "body Schütz" gravel protection. I figure if the first set lasted 25 years unprotected, these should be good for more than that, considering I have added splash guards under the rear fenders already.
