Seriously, I've driven lots of 964s and 993s (and all the others). Yes, the 993 is the better car in many ways and is arguably better looking to many people. However, the 964 is still substantially cheaper and I can't see the point of paying around £10k for an exquivalent 993 - you don't get that much more. Also, you can improve a 964 to bring it closer to the 993 in handling and performance.
Just my thoughts...

First of all, the gap between the 2 models in price is nowehere near £10K. A 1993 964 will set you back around £20K or so, the 1994 993 will cost around £24K.
Secondly, the performance issue is completely moot. Mainly because there isn't much of a difference at all. Certainly nothing £2K worth of mods would sort out. Although the 993 has a more refined ride.
The main issue here has to be looks, because that is the biggest difference between the 2 models. Dave K above has quite correctly stated that quite a few of us on here could be driving far more expensive cars if it came down to purely financial reasons.
The 993 to me just looks wrong. It is the love child of the 996 terminator who travelled back in time and sh**ged a 964. I am being hyper-critical though, if I couldn't have a 964 I would go for the other aircooled alternative.
Everyone has their own views and opinions of course, but there is a large number of us here that choose to drive a 964 specifically because we love it. Anyone else is quite frankly a heretic.
All IMHO and npt intended to flame. I guess none of us like to be labelled.

964 V 993 aesthetics 'simplistic approach'
993 has a slightly better rear
964 has much better front
Side view is a tie
But
993 rear is too 'big' for its front (esp. S version which reminds me of the Roadrunner in the cartoon!?)
964 is close to perfect front/rear balance
So the winner is the 964!
And at the moment I'm not biased!

Haven't we digressed a little? Doesn't take much to get us on to a 964 vs 993 discussion does it! I think we are perhaps a little sensitive on this issue!!!
Piers - has your question been answered? If so, what have you decided your car is worth? BTW, what colour is it?

ok, then back to the topic!
Piers there are so many factors to consider. Do you need to sell fast? Are you willing to spend your own valuable time and effort in waiting for/finding the right buyer who will pay max for the options, colour, upgrades etc?
Will £17K now be better than £18.5K in 8 months time?

Hello Fellow Listers,
I have sat on the side lines for over a year now and have enjoyed reading and learning from this site. I have to say though that IF my 964 with its bone dry engine, new clutch, cup mirrors and 18" wheels WAS for sale and it most certainly is NOT, you would not pry if from my hands for a penny under 22k. And thats my final answer.
Cheers,
Dave.

But I don't think there would be many 'pryers' at £22K.

Dove, at £12.5 you either bought it from a friend/relative or it must have required some serious work, which would the offset the value lost by others in depreciation.
Either that or you're a one off.

Perhaps Christer is referring to the UK market specifically, but in any event...ARE THEY????!!!!
Edit - i.e. Porsche sell then new at a premium over the coupe, so why not for used cabs too?
