Default frowning Friday

well, had my first buyer requested PPI on the car. The car has never leaked oil onto my garage floor, but apparently it needs a reseal. RMS, Cam chain covers, valve covers.... apparently all leaking. Was told the buyer could easily spend $10k on bringing the car up to maintenance level...

I know the steering rack needs work. Should probably replace it. The oil leak issue is a new one on me. They didn't have it on the rack when he told me about all this, so I can't say he's right or wrong.

I'm at a loss for words... I'm 90% sure my buyer is running away.

So... what are you doing this weekend?

I would take that $10K with a "big grain of salt".....ask for a detailed list of what the mechanic called "bring the car up to maintenance level"

I would say the majority of 964's for sale out there that would love to have $10k thrown at them.

A weekend of your time and a few hundred dollars (at most) for all new seals and fasteners. BTDT-several times! $10k is a complete engine rebuild.

Default Pulling the Starter :(

Start in the morning. I think it is original.... covered with CV grease (from old axles changed four years ago) Went to cars and coffee in Little Rock last Saturday and met some really nice and down-to-earth PCA club members. Later we ate then stopped at a nursery so the wife could look at plants and trees. Afterwards on our way home we stopped at a Shell station for some cold drinks and candy bar and my little black panther wouldn't start (only make a dragging-grinding sound). After waiting 30 minutes to make sure it wasn't too hot, tried again with the same results... Easily pushed started it in 3rd gear (station was on a slope) and drove the 70 miles back home. On arrival, it restarted easily...
I am glad I caught it now before I make a planned long trip next summer to the northwest. I have been reading the posts and learning the hints that make this less difficult (not easier according to the posts)

Just wait for another buyer. Or pay for a PPI elsewhere just so you have one to compare it against. Chances are the shop that conducted the inspection believes you will have the work done there...hence the long list

Don't believe the hype, I did it earlier this summer and it isn't half as hard as most of the posts on here will have you believe. The trick is to have a large assortment of different length extensions, and maybe a universal joint. I had mine out in under an hour (not including jacking the car up) and I usually run into snags with projects that other people don't. So don't dread it too much!

The starter really isn't too bad. If you have a smaller pair of hands, it helps, too

Hawk - That sounds like a shop looking for work. I would jack it up and see what you see. It may not be leaking that much. And as Jason said, many leaks are easily fixed, if you have the time.

My family is in town this week. Took Mon-Wed off to spend with them. Went up to Northern NH to look at the leaves and the remnants of the "Old Man on the mountain". They are flying out Sat afternoon and early Sunday. I will be helping a friend replace his catalytic converter on a 10 year old Honda Civic on Sunday. Next Saturday, I will be installing my rebuild engine and tranny into my coupe. Its been a 2 year project, delayed by various things. Looking forward to having the project wrapped up. Hoping that I can drive it for a while before the snow falls (salt truck season).

The last PPI i paid for showed me $15K worth of work the car didn't need and missed the $3K it did. Not all PPIs are created equal.

we out faith in these mechanics to be honest and forthright, not just looking for a buck. I don't know if he is, or isn't but I sure don't appreciate the doomsday mentality I've gotten from the last 2 shops I've been to.

He did have a nice gathering of cars in the shop, either ready for winter storage or being worked on. There was a Gullwing, too. And a '74 911 being restored.

my car could use $10k worth of work too. does that mean i couldnt drive it most days for the next 5 years and not do that work? no. the subjective part of the ppi is how nice does someone expect it to be? my car is a drivers car. I dont have time to take it to shows, i barely have enough time to go for a cruise a couple of nights a week. Do I mind that there are some drips on my garage floor? No. Everything works, and everything runs well.

I had a ppi done on an 83 sc about 4 months before i found the 964 (964 wasnt even on the radar). It needed a re-seal and a few other things, but was a nice driver. I passed on the car and kicked myself 3 months later bc the guy was going to make me a pretty good deal on the car, and with that $5k or so worth of work it would have been a really nice car. All water under the bridge now though, as I could not be happier that i found the 964. Especially since I havent had any surprises, even with my self done ppi

oh I know what should and could be done are worlds away and not everything needs to be done . I don't think this buyer has done his research on 964 Cars.

Agreed.

That could very well be it. I trusted my father for his own PPI when he purchased the car and (so far) it hasn't led me astray. Of course there is always room for upgrades but I think this is the shop trying to get itself an unknowing customer willing to pay 10k () for maintenance.

That said, I am looking forward to taking the 964 out today. My parents are coming into town and looking forward to taking the old man out for a jaunt in the car. Then hopefully we can install a few upgrades to the car later as my 964 has turned into a Father-Son project along the way.
