Question Belt Tensioner

Does the alternator belt tensioner assembly have an effect on the charging system performance? The surface that touches the belt appears to have disintegrated and I'm getting intermittent illumination of the alternator trouble light. The alternator is new and should not be the problem.

Thanks for any insight you can give me.

It's not really a fan belt tensioner, but a fan belt sensor. the purpose is to give you a warning !!! in case the fan belt breaks or otherwise gets dislocated.

If your belt is slipping then the alternator would not function properly. But, the belt sensor has nothing to do with this. The shims on the alt pulley control belt tension.
