Fuel Pump Checking
Hi,
This maybe a dumb question but is their any way I can check if my fuel pump is on its way out without replacing it (at a cost of >£150).
I have a whine in the car that I have finally traced to the fuel pump but don't know if the pump noise is normal and is just being being transmitted into the car.
With the pump mounts loose and my ear close to the pump I can certainly hear the pump buzzing away but then I would expect a motor/pump unit to make some noise.
I guess my real question is can you hear a new pump buzzing?
Other than the whine the car runs fine. It has 147,000 miles and no record of having a pump change during its life - maybe it deserves a new one!
Thanks
Steve

Electric fuel pumps make noise .
I find the pump in the 964 very hard to hear , I have to put my ear on the fender to hear it running when I turn it on all by itself via a dme relay jumper .
If your car runs your fuel pump is working .
If its making noise that you can hear from inside the car when the engine is running ,
it might just be time to proactively replace it .
If you send me a one way ticket to England , 3rd class or lower ,
I will hand deliver to you , free of charge , my spare , tested to work fine , fuel pump .

Thanks for your advice, you are right, it is time to replace the pump.
Thanks also for your kind offer of a pump, although I do not think I can help with the travel plans ;-)
