Drip Rail/Rain Gutter Delete...

I was looking at my car the other day and thought how cool she would look without the drip rails or rain gutters.
Can anyone tell me if they're structural or if they can be removed without issues? Has anyone done this?
As an aside, car freaks should check out "Overhaulin'" on Velocity network. It's Chip Foose's show that usually deals with 60s muscle cars but still a cool show to watch to see cars getting stripped down to bare metal and restored, sometimes classically, sometimes a bit more custom, but always pretty tasteful. Check out Chip Foose doing his line drawings free-hand style...very talented guy!

Its structural so a skilled and experienced person is needed to do this properly.
Be aware that if it rains, you'll get wet unless the window is closed. This modification is great for race cars and not a good idea for street-driven ones.

Remember reading over on the VW site about a man in VA with an Arena Red 993 that went under the knife. Looks great and always eye mine and think how nice it would look...but they are too useful!

Here's a pic of my Cobalt next to a green RUF 964 with all of the bells and whistles and no rain gutters. It's a great look and probably worth the trouble for high speed work.

I actually try to avoid the rain if I can help it. I don't even use water to wash my car, just detail spray.
I do like the aesthetics of the rail delete and wanted to hear from others their opinions...they definitely serve a purpose when in the wet.
