Default Lexan, plexiglass or standard rear 1/4 window glass???

So yesterday as with all good saturday morning tinkering a small job turned into a big and potentially expensive job...

Attempting to refit the rear 1/4 window trim in the channel resulted in an 'incident' which now leaves me with the possibility of replacing my rear quarter window glass with something lightweight.

My car is a track toy and already has the rs rear window glass but the question is is it worth swapping the rear quarter glass with something lightweight?

And if so what?

and how much weight will i really save myself?

Or should i just put normal glass back in and spend the ££ on a carbon bonnet?

Thoughts and guidance?

Cheers

Do you have Aircon still? If so, just go with std rear qtr.
If not, then cut it out of clear plastic - very easy - and allows for airflow with NCAA duct or slits, Whic you wld need w/o Aircon IMO.

At the same time you could take the opportunity to put 993 rear 1/4 window frames. They're a smoother and better design.

993 rear 1/4 window frames??? interesting... need to look that one up...

Is it a straight seal swap or numerous parts?

I believe it's a straight swap.

Ive been lookinginto this aswell, its definitely a good place to be taking weight from! Not sure on the weight of the standard part but ebmotorsport quoted 500 grams for a pair of polycarb windows, not cheap at £380 though but the quality is awesome and oe looking, pre curved the lot! Need to know more about 993 frames though!

Save your money and get composite (not carbon) lids.

While lexan is nice for those last pounds, it truly is a pain - despite what many will claim, it does indeed scratch and provides more hassles than necessary, unless you're down to the last pound.

Trust me on this, I miss my glass but "need" the weight savings.

Hey Kai, why not carbon lids?

Why pay the premium for something which will be painted anyway. Experience shows that the lower cost carbon panels require quite a bit of prep prior to paint...no money saved there either.

No real weight difference anyway.

If I remember correctly fully fiberglass (7kg) is 2kg heavier than fully carbon(5kg) with a carbon skin and fibreglass frame(6kg) sitting smack bang in the middle... That's according to the LWS site anyway...

I'm guess poly/lexan windows will save approx 1-1.5kg over glass

They will save a bit over glass but I found the main benefit to be airflow
And don't pay over the odds for a set - any plastics guy can cut them for cheap
Take the design off the 73 RS type like Magnus walker has on his ST
Or like on a 996/7 cup

http://www.lexan-windows.com/porsche...indow-kit.html

But I thought this price was mad tho looks nicely done

2 x 993 seals £45. 1 big bit of polycarb £10 (the polycarb will bend as required once installed)? I afternoon = complete ;-)

With the 993 seals do you need the 964 metal trim or are they surplus to requirements??

Surplus to requirements - so even more weight lost. Russ and tom have done the mod and it looks great (using 993 glass though) :-D

Quick Reply: Lexan, plexiglass or standard rear 1/4 window glass???
