Default 964 info needed

Did the 964 come with power steering?

Was tiptroninc an option and if so, was it still just a 5 speed?

Was there a 4 or 4S option?

(All questions from my Dad as he plans his build, but could not answer) Thanks in advance.

The 964 was a C4 first then joined by the C2. No 4S that I recall, only a Turbo (and Turbo-look variants).
There was a Tiptronic option, and it was a 4 speed.
IIRC the 964C4 had power steering.

The only 964's without power steering were the RS America and RS variants. Most have power steering.

Thanks guys. He is looking into several options but right now leaning towards an early 70s starting point and building in updated drivetrain and equipement (PS, Tipronic, AWD, Proper A/C) But retro the exterior.

I think I understand, but not certain.

Are you taking an early 70's car and fitting all of the newer 964 driveline into it, or taking a C4 and backdating the interior and exterior?

I have both the C4 and Carrera era cars, and they are surprisingly different. I suspect backdating a C4 would be much better than updating an early car, both in function and cost.

I am interested in building a lightweight street ride with NO options, and am facing the same dilemma. I want all of the performance and refined driving without the newer car flab and fluff.

I think that you are looking at a steep climb. Porsche said the 964 was 85% different from the previous generation 911, and there were many changes to the 911 between the 70s 911s and 89 Carreras.

As brokentoy suggested, backdating the look of a 964C4 might be an easier way to go.

Agreed. I advised him the same info. I think he was considering what fits, then considered a simple "shell swap" of older body over newer belly pan & chassis mounts, then considered something a bit more involved like re-engineering newer under body mounts into older body to house newer gear. But yes, I agree from what I know (which isn't much) that backdating a 964 exterior is the most cost effective and straight forward way to go and permits the use of 993 parts as well if he can find a straight 964 "roller". Powerplant is already established thankfully.
