Default Thank you

The baby got new shoes today. I could not be more excited. I just want to thank this forum and the people on it. Without your help I could have not found the wheels or known exactly what I needed in tires. No spacers needed. Thank you thank you!! Now I'm just waiting on center caps from a pelican user. Ill post a before and after.

Like a different car.

Nope. No other mods. I do not think I am going to lower. The car is perfect and still totally stock other than today's mod. I'd like to keep it that way

Sorry man! With stock suspension and the bigger twists, the car looks silly. Definitely needs to be lowered to remove some of that wheel gap!

Yes, I agree, the car needs to be lower. Think of it this way: the car was designed to be at ROW height, only for the North American market did Porsche raise them to conform with their silly bumper height regulations. You will actually make it more original by lowering it. :-)

Love the colour and the twists look great. But if they are original shocks the'y'll be gone after 20 years. I'd put Bilstein HD's and some lower springs on - you can keep the originals and return to stock if you wish. You don't need to go 'slammed' low - maybe 30mm is all you need to make a big difference, esp up front. But a personal choice so respect your call.

Now lower it, or put the D90s back on

I appreciate all of the suggestions. I am not opposed to the lowering. I thought I was going to argue about lowering but I see the point when I look at the pictures. What components are involved? Who do you suggest make the springs? Also, what make and model of oil is the best? I use 20W50 right now. I do not know which manufacturer to use. Also what wax do you use? WHo makes the best wax?

Bilstein HD with H&R Sports springs. Brad Penn 20w 50 oil, I can't help you with the wax.

Default Wow, three hand grenades in one post!

BrownGill, I am your friend, please believe me. Learn to search before you throw out questions about shocks/springs, oil, wax, or preferred ride height.... There are some, especially on other model sections that would start ...arguments... to say it politely, and especially oil and the frequency with which we should change the oil....

The search function here on Rennlist works really good.

Oil, syn or not? Brad Penn "the green oil" or my preference Valvoline VR-1 Racing Fully Synthetic 20-50 "the blue oil" or Mobil V-Twin Oil..... and a half dozen others.... But I use what I can find easily, and occasionally on sale (buy 96 quarts. at a time at nearly 1/2 price!!!!) With DIY oil changes costing nearly $100, saving $30-40 just on oil for an oil change is a good deal.

Bilstein HD (with red or green springs, (now purple?)), or PSS-10, or KW variant version 1, 2 or 3. Each depending on how you spring them, you can still maintain that soft ride but also enjoy better control! I am crazy, I run cup shocks with cup springs...Yes, I feel every expansion joint. But it is flat in the curves for the way I like to drive (watch that one comment start a discussion)

Believe it or not, lower on the discussion forum is a "Concours and Car Care" section that is worthy of spending time on. I learned to do a lot on my car as far as detailing. I bought my porsche salvage after it set 2+ years in the sun. 20+ hours later, it polished out beautifully. (Still needs bumpers painted because of stone chips and mileage) As far as wax, believe it or not, it could be up to the color of car you own. Some claim some waxes work better depending on the color of the car. Search and read more.

Preferred ride height is the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". some like it slammed, some not. What you probably want is RS + some number... There are lots of posts with pictures of ride height. You measure ride height from suspension location specified by Porsche... not to the top of the arch of the fender... but some do it anyway. They do it for looks, not Porsche's tested ideas of performance.

last but not least, at the bottom of the forums is a DIY section for 964's. It is very useful, and the more enterprising of us will even film the "how to" about specific repairs.

You have a beautiful car, search the sections and topics about each of the issues and keep us posted what you do next. we all like to follow what everyone is doing in the family!

I appreciate the advice Turbo. I was in no way trying to start a huge discussion. My first thought was to thank the community for all of the help and advice. A lot of really good eggs in here. Then I was interested in two things that I had searched in the forums a few times tonight but did not see anything worth while. In regard to oil, I'm interested in oil for 964 owners only. I will do some more searching on oil. I saw lots of discussion.

I probably will not lower my car. I like it as close to stock as I can keep it. Lastly, i started the thread. Im sorry that it may have swayed from its original purpose but is it really that big of a deal...?? Thank you for telling me about the detail section. I'm headed there now. Have a good night.

Browngill,

NICE CAR! That is an awesome color and the twists really look awesome on your car. If you wanna leave it at that height more power to you, if not, there are lots of good options that run the gambit.

That's the cool thing about these cars there are some really good choices for them in the aftermarket and you can 'hunt' for the best thing for what you want to do with the car.

One thing you've probably noticed is that you'll get lots of unrequited opinions, (we're an opinionated bunch ain't we?) but hey, that's one of the things that makes the forums so helpful too! I've never been one to tell a guy how he should mod his car unless asked frankly, but to each their own.

The oil, and wax questions are a little loaded (not intentionally to be sure) but personally I use what Rothsport and Rennsport Systems recommend - 15w45 Brad Penn. That said, I'm sure there are other excellent choices.

Take care, welcome, and have fun deciding your next move(s) That's where the fun is!

Nice... Metallic Velvet Red (81L 97)? Same as mine but have recently been told by Porsche that touch-up paint in this colour is no longer available. Checked a few indies and it's the same with them. Let me know if you find anyone that has some in stock - I need some!

L81L Velvet Red Metallic. It is a beautiful color. I am sad to hear that the touch up paint is not being manufactured. I have some in this car supposedly. I have not looked at it closely. I have some rock chips and would love to fix them. I'll start searching. If I find anything ill send it over to you. Have you filled rock chips before? How hard is it?
