Street-registered 964 Cup Car in US?
Folks,
I've read a bunch of older threads on the possibility of street-registering a 964 Cup car in the U.S. and all have said that it is impossible, if it was already imported in to the U.S. under the race-car EPA (and DOT?) exception. However, these cars are nearly 25 years old now and I am wondering if the rules may change at that point? I know it becomes easy to import and register a non-conforming car in to the U.S. when it is 25 years old, but I am talking about a car already imported it to the U.S. under the race car exception.
If it matters, Illinois (where I live) will issue antique license plates to cars 25 years old, and there are no emission inspections required for pre-ODB-II cars.
In the older threads on the subject, there were many opinions thrown out suggesting illegal work-arounds like using plates from another car when driving on the street, or questioning the reasons for trying to street-register a race car in the first place. If possible, I'd like to avoid that discussion and hear only from those with knowledge and/or experience related to my specific inquiry... Thanks much!

They are over 25 years old so can now be imported and registered in the U.S. relatively easily. Again, the car I am referring to was imported long ago under a race-car exception.

You can import a street car that was not sold in US and bring it into compliance for street use (964 RS) but you can't import a race car that was not ever designed for street use and register for street use. These cars are imported on a special waiver.
