Default Drilling holes to remove weight.

Who has done this and where can it be safely removed without affecting the rigidity or structure of the car?

Only common place I can think of is the front/rear bumper beams.

There are a few threads on the matter kicking around - have not done this myself.

There are so many places to drill holes to lose weight I don't even know where to start. Doors, boot, bonnet, handles, levers, pedals - basically anywhere that isn't structural or safety.

Have a quick look at this guys project, it's a bit special - if you have a flick through the pages you can see a number of places where you can drill holes to lose weight.

Really? Get to 8% body fat and take driving lessons before drilling holes in your car.

Awesome.

Thanks for the link. Seems like there's some more threads on pelicanparts about it than there are of it over here.

Seems like you'd be inviting a whole new level of corrosion to your car if you start drilling holes in it unless you live somewhere where it never rains.

Seems fine for a track car - they live a pretty protected life.

Overkill for a street car.

Piffle!

If you want to lose weight from the car then every little bit counts and it fairly soon all starts to add up. Of course you're not going to drill holes in exposed areas and not refinish it so I don't really buy into the corrosion argument.

Anyway drilling holes is a lot more fun than putting yourself on a diet!

I forgot about this thread, there's some great drilling examples in here:

Don't listen to the doubters & get drilling I do agree that drilling the key to lose weight may be taking it a bit far though

+1 with what^^^^^ Alex said

drilling holes is not the best way to save weight

removing parts and changing materials will save a lot more, eg steel density is 7.8 and carbon is 1.6ish or alumnium is 2.8 or removed is 0.0

also to improve handling start working from the rear, then up high and move forward along the car

I have managed to remove 34 lbs of sprung weight this winter, and kept all the features of the car intact.. My pants fit better as well

I lost 42lbs in 6 months (diet & exercise) - I noticed significant acceleration and top speed performance gains in my 964 and FXHO waverunner.

I would never consider drilling holes in my 964. How much weight can be saved by drilling holes? 20lbs? 30lbs? What are you doing to the overall value to your 964?

Corrosion and structural issues -

I actually saw that thread and found a few other ones that had some good pictures and information on it.

As far as losing weight. Sounds like some of you guys have really let yourselves go a bit too far.
