Default engine oil consumption

Hi folks,
I understand for our 964 it is quite common to have oil leak around the car or at the engine, but I would like to share my oil consumption to see whether it is too high or acceptable.

mileage on clock is 113643, and the consumption is 1249miles /qt .
this is my everyday car and I do use it to travel during weekends.

Cheers.

I'd say thats about right from what I remember reading before. Also, thats around what my car gets, but I drive it mainly weekends but pretty hard.

Mine is worse than that with less miles. I'm around 92,000 miles and burning a quart every 900 miles. I'm thinking I'm due for a top end rebuild soon.

IIRC Porsche's 'cause for concern' spec is 1qt/600mi (!). OP, I think you're fine. At that rate of consumption you could probably extend your oil change interval.

my data point: Weekend driver, one quart per 1300 miles, Valvoline VR1 20W50, 40k miles on the engine with leakdown at or less than 4% all around.

+964. Back in 1996 (approx 60K miles), my mechanic (a dealer) recommended a "total engine reseal" for $11K plus parts. I laughed saying that "Do you know how many quarts of Mobil 1 I can buy with that?" The dealer insisted that it was for safety. I declined. I drove the car. A few years later a different mechanic found that my oil pressure sender was leaking. He fixed it and it stopped most of my oil drips. I drove the car for another 15 years (170K miles). It still had a few drips but I'm happy I didn't spend that money for the reseal.

Words of wisdom. Excellent example

This should be copied and pasted on every "my car needs a reseal" thread

Official publication of 'out of the box' oil consumption is 1.5 liters per 1000km (1.6 US qt per 621 miles).

My engine 130k miles and one rebuild later (prev owner) seems to be actually better than that and with the odd garage floor spot so I'm plenty happy. So, even at that consumption rate and factoring in engine rebuild average cost and loads of Mobil semi 10W-40 I'm looking at over 900k miles....

My engine has 110k with no rebuild and is getting about 1,200 mi per qt (10W40 M1). Recent leakdown #s were <5% except for cyl 1 which was 15%. I have a few leaks/drips so I subtract a few oz from the oil consumption total. Based on the "drip rate" I have figured out I lose about 5 oz of oil per year onto the garage floor/pavement. I can share/compare my "drip math" if anyone is interested

I told my mechanic my burn rate (no drips) and he just shrugged. I was alarmed at first, but find this thread great therapy. You can also buy a Porsche branded quart-of-oil holder.

Same question as Indycam posed to the OP - does your car leave drops on the garage floor?
