Default So It Begins

Hi,

That's not entirely true, it's been beginning for about 3 years but the really serious stuff is about to start tomorrow.

Well, that's not entirely true either, the 964 is going in tomorrow to have full top and bottom rebuilt but I'm not sure when Nick Fulljames at Redtek will start but this week I hope. Hot on the heels of Frank's Black Betty.

The bad news is it's snowing hard here and I may not get out of the village! I'm beginning to wish she was a Carrera 4 instead of a 2.

Here's a photo on the day we met (after several months searching) and what's been achieved so far:

She's a 1990 Carrera 2 manual, with linen leather, sunroof, A/C and top-tint windscreen and only 70k fully documented miles. Despite the car being in overall exceptional condition there were a few issues to sort. Rust bubbling under the paintwork at the bottom of windscreen pillars, rust underneath the anodising of the off-side rear window frame, an oil leak coming from thermostat housing, a cracked rear spoiler curtain and a pig ugly aftermarket stereo.

Windscreen came out, minor rust sorted and replaced with a new windscreen seal. I decided just to replace the rear n/s widow frame and another new seal. The oil leak was also eventually sorted as was skirt for the rear spoiler. The radio was replaced at the local OPC with a Porsche Classic bluetooth satnav/mp3/phone. Oh, and a C2 registration with my son's initials as this one's a keeper.

I'm no stranger to Porsche cars they have been a passion since I mistakenly believed I was the reincarnation of James Dean

I bought my first when I was 25 (from Tony Dron). I went into the showroom to buy a 911 and came a way with a well sorted 924 Turbo which was Tony's Porsche company demo and promotions car which he assured me was a better car for a youth my age. I had experience of a 911S and the test drive of the 924 Turbo was a revelation so my initial scepticism was soon overcome. Apart from having suspension and steering mods it had also been a show car. Still evident in the windscreen is the 1980 Le Mans sticker, I took her back the following year, courtesy of Tony Dron.

After several pleasant years together and several trips through Europe including the 1981 Le Mans as a guest of Porsche (how long have you got?) we parted company the best of friends and I went back to the OPC for the 911 I had intended to buy in the first place. This time I came away with a beautiful nearly new 204bhp Guards Red SC with whale tale (I'll find some pics). The SC was a brilliant car which I truly loved, more so than the 3.2 Carrera Sport which followed, also Guards Red. I know but you had to be there, it was the era for them

Back to the almost present, I had always planned to return to the 911 air-cooled scene and the 964 seemed like the best of everything, old school looks with a degree of modernity for touring and oil-leaks aside, a big heart. Also it was the car I almost bought after the 3.2 but missed out because I need something bigger to cart baby stuff around

Weeks of Swiss-waxing, engine cleaning and leather restoration followed the 964 purchase before my attention turned to the D90's. I hated them when they were new and the intervening years IMO had not particularly been kind to them.

Engine before :

After some TLC (also showing new rear reflector and light clusters):

These wheels the Veloce Speedline RS copies which I'm happy with for now as originals are a bit pricey when I have plans for the engine, brakes and suspension although they are fitted with a nice set of n-rated Conti's. At the same time last year I fitted a new Dansk SS 1 into 2 exhaust to compliment the G-pipe which replaced the secondary exhaust a few months earlier. Unfortunately this will have to go as Redtek are fitting a new SS custom exhaust to compliment the new 3.8 build.

As previously stated elsewhere I had been researching engine builds and it came down to two specialists and last year I made the call to Nick at Redtek to tell him I wanted to go ahead. We planned for February although he's running a late but that gave me a chance to turn my attention to brakes and supension.
At this point I would like to thank all contributors this forum who have been invaluable to me

I sourced a set of Big Reds and the shocks and springs from a low mileage (13k) 964 Turbo. I had them all restored with 2 pack (springs included, although I'm not using the springs & shocks).

So with the money I have saved by using 2nd hand Brembo brake callipers I set about the suspension. I mentioned I had also acquired the Turbo coils and dampers but this was thought to be too much work, so these will also have to go to a new home.

I have always thought that Bistein were synonymous with Porsche so they were my first choice if I could get a set at a reasonable price. Job done! A set of B16's at a very good discount took everything else out of consideration.

Unfortunately I have no pics of them installed but I will need to take the wheels off the clean the arches properly when the car comes back from Redtek so if anyone's still interested I'll post them later. This is what it looks like as of yesterday though. The car feels amazing at no. 5 setting (not tried anything else yet).

I couldn't resist the Prototipo

Take a look at the engine guys it's the last time we're going to see it looking like this

If anyone's still with me I bet you're starving so grab this

Cheers for now,
Paul

Your car looks stunning. What steering wheel is that? Really suits the interior with the white stitching

This will be great follow its progress from mild to wild!!

I can totally understand why you never went the long hood/ retro look as from the pics from when you first got her on the D90's it looks way to nice to back date and looks very un,molested .....untill now anyways : ) but there 20 odd years old now so I think the 964 is getting better with age as time goes on.....my sons friend always loves it when I pick him up in my old Porsche as he calls it!!

Hey Paul,

Great car, looks absolutely stunning!

So you going for 3.8! Whoohooo.

Can you tell us anything else about the engine build?

How far are you goin? And what sort of BHP are you hoping for?

How long does a 3.8 build take?

Will you be selling the exhaust and any other bits?

Cheers

Steve

Hi,

Well, I picked the worst day to take her into Redtek, a journey that should have taken about 3.5 hours took over 5. M62-M1 tailback for 20 miles

Never mind, all's well that ends well and she starts her health spa holiday today. They are breaking her in gently and to remove all the salt spray we acquired she's being treated to a full pressure wash, she doesn't know yet but very soon she's having a full colonic

and if Frank's engine is anything to go by, you should be nail-bitingly happy!
Thanks Cheeksyboy, I'll be down to my toe-nails before long

Cheers Fuch, Nick a had a lengthy conversation with me about the same thing today. People are beginning to realise exactly how good a sorted 964 is and it's possibilities. They are becoming the weapon of choice.

Oooh!

The Magpie Cafe, Whitby! My favourite! Hoping to get there over Easter.

Tell them you have your disabled grannie with you and you won't have to queue. Rick Stein reckons they are the best but I guess we could have told him that. While we're on about Mags, 13th now! A win's a win

Jotaking, thanks! Yes I have a list I intend to put it all down soon... according to Nick, "the full 350 build."

When the Dansk SS system is off the car it will be up for sale. It was put on last year just before I spoke to Nick Fulljames and has only around 2k miles on it. The G-Pipe was fitted 1 year earlier, with poss. 4k miles on it. The system is a 1 into 2 which requires a near-side under bumper quarter panel. But to bolt straight on I suppose an alternative would be to get someone to weld up the near-side hole in the silencer with a stainless blank. I believe it's the same item for single outlet silencer but with the extra hold blanked up. It will come with G-Pipe (secondary silencer delete) and L & R tail pipes. Any interested can send me a PM expressing interest and I'll get in touch (with photos) for best reasonable price when it comes off and is nice and shiny. Obviously it would be best collected from Redtek but I could meet on way home if required, or UPS'd or whatever.

I have a set of 964/5 Turbo springs and dampers, original factory fitted from a 13k miler. I had the springs powder coated (brake calliper red, like H&R's) and the dampers have been painted original black with 2 pack. I am going to polish up the adjustment rings and they will look better than new when finished (again photos to follow). Again anyone interested please check they are suitable for what you want to do and PM me.

Nick has bagged the old calipers and disks.

can you give us a review of the classic satnav/ stereo?
Sure thing Frank. I'll take some photos of the various screens with a short description on the functions. For now, its a great piece of kit which will stream music wirelessly from your iPhone/MP3, no messy wires. The only drawback about that is that it's not charging your phone/MP3 but playing music doesn't sap much juice.

The colour screen its touch sensitive and quite small but sat/nav instructions come over loud and clear and can be adjusted for volume separately from music. It's easier for the passenger to see the route displayed due to light reflection (possibly my eyes are going too ) but the verbals are great. Inputs are easy and previous destinations, POI's, filling stations etc., are stored.

It's also a handsfree phone kit & a good one at that with no echoing. Also it has a facility to wire in a reversing camera (official extra part). There is a DVD/CD slot behind the front panel which drops down on a hinge. You can watch Steve Mcqueen drive into Le Mans while on your picnic.

An audio/viz input slot is on the front behind a slider and it all comes with a handy remote control (who uses them?). The 2 main button controls on the front - the left is volume the right hand one doesn't turn, it's a toggle switch to choose functions.

The overall sound quality is truly excellent and in true Porsche style, it looks bomb-proof. Finally you can have the Porsche script on or off, its the same price. My OPC fitted mine, when I collect the 911 from Redtek I'll take it in for an update on the software as a notification came through on the way down to keep up with recent road changes. There is no monthly/annual subscription.

Any questions about it please ask.

I forgo to say in my original post that I had also fitted some tear-drop/cup mirrors which I bought second hand and complete at a very reasonable price from Jasmine Porsche. I know these are quite hard to come by so keep checking with them if anyone is looking for a set.

All recent paintwork was done by Heritage Classics at Middlesbrough http://www.heritageclassics-teesside.co.uk/ The near-side quarter bumper for extra exhaust outlet was not, it needs redoing by someone who takes pride in their work like Heritage but Nick might get that sorted for me. It needed prepping before painting.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Andreas

Yes I'm afraid the D90's don't do much for the car do they? IMO same applies to the flag mirrors, they look fine on the SC's and Carreras but cup/tear-drops look right on the 964.

Cheers,
Paul
