Import euro spec 964 in US
It seems that will will send me to the US for a long time. From reading online it seems that importing a euro (german) spec 964 into the US is not that easy, although from Adrians book, all that is different is a jumper setting on the ecu harness. The car is 20 years old ths month (03.1993), so in some states it is a classic/collectors cars already.
Does anyone have any experience with this? From the CARB/EPA/NHTSA websies it seems that you have to work with special importers and prove emissions etc.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

buy one over there. way cheaper if you're coming from euro based countries. if you stay long enough (6 months or so....), you can reimport without paying sales tax and sell it. import into EU is easy. ship it over, pay fees, get it. no hassle. east coast->rotterdam oder ec-> bremerhaven is about $900 with insurance

I believe that you can import your car for use while here. Just have to take it when you go back home.
Check with an import broker.

Roberto, don't waste your time and money. It is a complicated and expensive progress. I've done it extensively in the '80s until exchange rates turned. I have also re-imported my previous RSA which I bought in CA and shipped to Ireland and the process took quite a while to prove EPA and DOT compliance. Federal laws govern importation, not state laws.
You will find that you can find some very nice examples here in the US. Stick with a West Coast car and they are rust free too.

Is the problem getting it in the states or registering it once it is here?

First problem is for Customs/Dept of Homeland Security to release the car. Second problem is finding insurance for it. Third and final problem is registering it at your local DMV.

I know its complicated. Isnt thre some law saying that you dont have to modify a collectors car? I can have he car pre checked at work here as well as at work in the us. I was hoping for some special rules for collectrs cars.
