Default Cab rear spoiler LED third light

I have searched the forum and read most of the third light delete (ET) threads. I just acquired a spare (blue) spoiler that I intend to hack and build in a replaceable LED strip for a brake light. It's a combination of getting the true porsche lines back and have protection of third light. I will keep original spoiler untouched.

Has anyone completed one or tried it and would advise what not to do? Also, any concerns or challenges with the project? The car is new to me last year so I am still learning. I just don't care for third light and if spoiler idea does not work I am deleting anyway.

Thanks.

Here is donor spoiler. I am trying to seperate the blue bezel from the black vent. How are these held together? I am assuming some double sided tape or adhesive, but I do not want to break.

Thanks for any advice.

According to someone who posted in another thread, and a friend who does bodywork, they're bonded together and don't come apart without damage.
I wanted to take mine apart to fix a crack.

Thanks. I appreciate heads up. I think I can add light without, but sure would be easy if I could seperate. I will search for threads that give more info on spoiler instead of just third light. Thanks again.

I'm cutting into the spoiler this weekend to get a look and find path for wires etc. Any reccomendations on project are welcome.

Once I see options for wiring etc, I will be looking for appropriate LED strip. I am thinking I will make a plastic/epoxy tray that will allow me to replace LED when it goes bad. Once done I expect I can clean up the perimeter with body fillers and get the spoiler painted.

I will post pictures of progress. I don't think I am the first but haven't seen any DIY threads here or on Pelican for such a project. Maybe my searching is sub par.

Wish me luck!

Ordered what I think will be a workable LED strip. When it arrives, I will post some information. It used for motorcycle trunk bags as an auxiliary brake light. Looks to be bright and is felxible so it will bend with the contour of spoiler. Wasn't cheap as others, but having a smoke lense and flexible was part of what I was looking for. More to come later this week.

i have a cracked rear spoiler in the garage that i just replaced and i believe that the parts are
glued / heat "welded" together in a way that taking them apart will not be easy.

on a different note to OP and 964 heaven - any chance any of you want to sell me your third brake light ?
i also do not like it but want to stay original and DOT legal.
if so please shoot me a PM.

for the time while mine is gone i placed a decal over the holes and would have searched Mc Master carr for rubber plugs - no clue if they make those in color, but even black might look better than nothing. but the white company decal just fit perfectly on the grand prix white car.
just as a temporary solution for you guys maybe.

I found on previous RL posts that some used Bumper Plugs. https://www.bumperplugs.com/ I know we need two sizes.

I am having some rust worked on professionally this spring so I have opporutunity to consider a semi-permant fix and respray of the lid. I have already added spoiler to be painted after I modify it.

LED update. I rec'd LED last night. It is what i expected and looks promising. It is VERY bright. My current thought is I might hold off modifying the spoiler and simply drill a hole for the wire and route it. It comes with a 3M VHB adhesive strip which is very good and since it is flexible it countours nicely to the shape of spoiler. The smoke lense on it will likely good on a black spoiler. They make them in red, clear and smoke. I will post picture of the light tonight.

Here are photos of new light. I taped it to where I will likely locate it. Spoiler will be black to match car after I ready it for mount and drill holes. Car is still in storage so can't try it until streets are clean here. Light was $80 plus shipping. I think I want spare plug to match factory installation and will connect to new light. More pics as I make progress. Still thinking I will surface mount for now.
