Upgrade my 964 or buy and additional car?
Chaps,
Wanted to do some work on my carrera 4, new Bilsteins, Recaros and some bodywork stuff. Altogether looking at around £3000 plus the cost of a yearly service. Now as the car is a Cat C it is never going to be worth more than a certain amount so I am unsure as how much to spend on it. The dampers will add no value, the bodywork will do but essential work only would be around £500-£600.
So, I was going through the classifieds and have seen that 944's are unbelievably cheap. From £2k upwards, with what look like pretty good cars form £4-5k. Now these cars are not going to go any lower in value.. so was thinking, just do essential stuff on the 964 (no recaros, bilsteins..etch) and buy a 944.. or even a little Lancia Fulvia at around £6k, tax exempt, definitely hold it's value and great fun..or a little Mx5 Mk1, amazing fun, get a good one for £2k.. Any of these I can sell further on without much cost.. the upgrade options would however be mostly lost cash..
What do you guys think?

If you dont need 2 cars , spend it on the 964 !

If you are going to keep the 964 and enjoy it then my view would be to do the work. Dont look at 'money recovery' per se as the trade off against depreciation on a mainstream car these are good value.
All the work you do document/photo it so that when/if you sell the buyer can make an informed decision.
A second car means double insurance, double the work and despite your car being Cat C looks bloody good.
I'm going through the same process and looking at £5k to sort paintwork, 'enhanced' servicing and bits and pieces I want to put right. That doesn't include suspension which although doesn't need doing I will want to replace at some point.
I could get away with spending a lot less but in my mind I want the car right. All my work will be documented, photographed and a suitable forum write up adding to the stacks of provenance I've already uncovered.

Is the 964 your daily? do many miles?
If you want Recaros and Bilsteins you could always keep the standard seats and shocks and swap back before selling car on?
Not sure on maintenance costs etc on 944 but I do know mx5s are cheap and fun

Mistake, car is cat D not C! My 964 is just a weekend car. So far it is my favourite by far so think I will be keeping it for quite a while, however circumstances change and I don't want to be cought out having to sell he car and loosing loads of money on it.. It is a good car but the stigma of the cat D really makes me aware of how much to put into it. If I go this route I am almost tempted to sell and buy another non Cat car that is worth spending more cash on..
There is also the novelty of another new car!

Cat D or not your car is a good car so IF you sold it on now i think you would get fair money for it as if I remember you got it for a great price & if I was looking for a 964 and yours came up for 3/4 k less than non cat d and the ppi was good it would not put me off buying it as I think most people expect a 5 k spend putting things right & that's why good well sorted 964 are going for 18k up with all the bits&bobs done.....anyways keep it as its a nice car with a few desirable bits on it already...

Cat D doesnt impact the value of the improvements you make to it
If I recall you paid somewhere around 5k (at least) less that it would have been for a non recorded car and should expect similar when you sell
However whatever value during your ownership you add is still there Cat D or not
Given the rising 964 market I dont see any way you can lose

I had a slightly similar quandry recently. The 964 is in for bodywork, I've tried to weigh up whether I won't to go further with it with track mods. In the end I decided its at its best as a road car in its current form. So I'm keeping the 964 as is and building a full on track day car.

A whole new skyline R32 GTR with R33 engine and R34 turbos, i've got some mahoosive brakes and some other toys for it and i've got it booked for mapping next week. Just got to sort a cage. Its a bit of ratty old thing inside but it should be a hoot.

I agree with the wise words above.
Bottom line is how you feel about the car... If it's a keeper just enjoy it and don't think of resale and values. If you really did, you'd ride the bus... every car is a money pit to one extent or another and in varying degrees.
Just enjoy the car and relax. Focus your energies/ funds on one beast is what I say - make the car perfect for you and no one else.
I'd hate to think I was doing what I've done for the next person....
