Default Warning light help

Hi. The BRAKE warning light comes on shortly after starting along with the light that has an outline of the four wheels and axel. Any ideas what this can be?

Also, I've changed pads on an '84 Carrera. How different is it on my '90 964?

Many thanks.

Is it a C4 or C2? does it go away after running a bit?

I had that one time recently. Does it do it all the time?

When you turn the key to on are you waiting until the pump stops running to start the car?

It's a C4. It doesn't go away after running. If lucky, it doesn't come on for maybe a block but usually before I get out of the driveway. Been this way for probably 6 months. No noticeable difference in driving or braking.

I don't wait for the pump to stop running before I start the car - haven't in the 2+ years of owning it. Should I be?

Thanks.

C4s are very sensitive to brake fluid levels in the reservoir. I recommend that you ensure that yours is at the max line.

Great! I'll try that.
Now, what brake fluid? Dot 5?

DOT 4. Check it's at the FULL mark with the engine running.

There we go. It's at the min level with engine running. Do I top it off with the engine running (ie I can open the cap with engine running). Thanks.

I've had the same situation in my C4 I plan to take a look when I get it out of storage. The lights and sound usually turned off before I got out of driveway and would not come on again until next time it sat in garage.

Speaking of brakes, I've changed the pads on an '84 Carrera I use to have; is this '90 C4 as traight forward? Thanks.

Topping it off with brake fluid did the trick! Amazing: I've been driving around for 4-5 months just ignoring the warning lights figuring it was just an "old car" thing. Nice to have them off again.
Now, do I attempt to replace my brake pads myself? Again, much harder then an '84 Porsche (or for that matter a 2001 BMW or '65 falcon - I've done all those brakes)?
