The levers have a "key" across the rear that fit into slots on the gearbox shafts. It should be obvious if they are not engaged. To check, remove a rear quarter panel and look closely. If still unsure, slacken the bolt more (even almost remove it - you can't do any harm) until you can see.

Hi Rob. yes, I do hear the motors try to make everything work. As soon as I see the top not moving though, I stop for fear of breaking something. The DIY thread looks like the route I am going to have to take. From the looks of it, I think it's going to take me a while so I might just go manual top up/down with electric latches until we get a rainy day for me to work on it. Tough to work on it on these beautiful weekends we have been having! I'll let you all know how things progress. Thanks all for the info, it has been very helpful.
