I now have the values from all cylinders and they are

The shop gave me a pretty good walk thru of the costs associated with a full top end rebuild. The wild card seems to be whether pistons and cylinders are needed - I was surprised to see a they retail for $3.5k + (pelican parts). Can you comment on how often you see the need to replace these? I realize I'm asking unanswerable questions here but I'm looking to shape my expectations.

Not very often Porsche Nickies are pretty frecken hard. 200k motors if well taken care of show virtually no wear -- sometimes even have the factory crosshatches still in the bores at 200k+.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. My offer was not accepted and I am fine with that. I am still trying to feel out what a reasonable price for these cars is. From readin a great many ads it seems that top end rebuilds are almost universal by the ~100k mark. I am moving forward with the notion that I either want a car on which this has been done, or one that will allow me to budget for the work to be done without putting the car over my ~20k budget.
If anyone knows of such a car (coupes only) please drop a line.
