Yes I would have thought so. I currently use some 9" x 3" timbers as my jack does not go that low.
Only jacked off the engine case a few times but hated it. Just feels so wrong.

I thought I'd add to the review for the lift bars... Just picked up a pair from Liftbars.com (no affiliation).
I put them to use today for an oil change and loved them. I had all four corners up and on jack stands in about 10 minutes max. The bars have a section of round stock at each end so bars rotate nicely in the jack stands as you lift from side to side. This is a great feature.
Ken at Liftbars.com was a great guy to deal with also. It turned out that we live in the same area (Portland, OR), so Ken offered to refund my shipping charge and just drove them over to my house himself. He gave me a couple of tips on using the bars when he was over as well. What a pleasure to deal with! I would definitely recommend these to DIY'ers.
