Default Newbie questions

Had the 964 for a few weeks now, so have a few questions. I've so far discovered 2 issues.

The first is a drone from the rear at speed. It's dependant on speed not revs, why guess would be a wheel bearing does that sound about right?

The second relates to the hydraulics. When its been standing for a while and started I get the warning light on the dash and then a buzzer. This goes away after about 30 secs to a minute, which from searching the site seems common. My concern is that the pump appears to be quite noisy, is that normal?

Final question related to finding out history. I went through all the invoices that came with the car and these go back to about 2002. Previous to that all work was carries out at merlin porsche Nottingham however I don't seem to be able to find much out about them, does anyone know if they are still trading? Are records held centrally by porsche and has anyone tried to get copies of the work carried out?

Apologies for the long post and cheers in advance for any help!

Haves - Welcome aboard bud

First of all check out this link and if you're free come along to our meeting and meet a few other 964 owners! We have a run out every month:

http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=78239

Getting back to your questions...

1) sounds like a wheel bearing
2)this is normal in colder weather as the system presurises. If you search there will be a few theads on what is normal and what can be done to help
3) my car also came with about 6 years of Merlin Porsche in the stamps. I dont think they exist anymore. My car has only been serviced at Strasse after this.

Where did you get the car from bud?

Cheers will try and get along! Have had tvrs for the last few years so this is a complete change!

Great help thanks, was a risky non ppi purchase so just going through what I need to get sorted. Got the car from down the midlands way, didn't pay too much for it so knew it would come with a niggle-list!

I'll try and get some pics up later.

Welcome! Enjoy the 964. I love mine.
Sorting out the minor (and major) issues is all part of the fun. Apparently.

Superb pics, looks like it'll fit right in then!

Out of interest who do you use for servicing as its due a 12k service? I've spoken to Tom Feguson who seems a really nice guy, however seems a little pricey. Also seen Performance Porsche (halifax) and Revolution porsche west yorkshire who seem a bit cheaper.

Could also be rear CV joint. On my car the boots were split and the joints dry; a rebuild cured the noise in my case.

I send mine all the way back to Strasse in Leeds. They really know their stuff

Mine only has Merlin and Strasse stamps in the book tho (the last 3 owners have bought / sold at Strasse) so seems bad to change the book! They always drop off / collect me and the missus from Leeds city centre too, for much drinking and shopping

Tom is a bit hit / miss. Some like him, some dont. I'll let you do a search to find out the crack. You could always pop along and have a chat to know more.

There's also Jamie Nelson in Teeside (ex Redline Racing) who gets good reviews and Redline Racing of course, down Thornaby.

Welcome!

1) The noise at the rear could also be the tire. I would also check that the transmission fluid level to eliminate that as a possible cause.

2) The noises are sound like the ABS system pressurizing itself. Its normal, assuming this is a C4

3) Nothing to add.

Cheers for all the advice above re the issues! I've contacted strasse for info about servicing also.

It's recently had new Pirelli tyres and I think the fluid levels were done at last service, although this was a while ago.

I'll reply on the other thread about the drive out cheers

Nice to see another red one.
When I bought mine it had a noisy wheel bearing. Porsche say you have to heat up the swing arm and use a press to remove but they usually come out with a puller. Then freeze the new one to go back in. Did mine myself, but you need a big socket set and a piece of scaffolding to undo the hub nut.
