Default Can one remove the oil filter w/o draining the oil????

Hey Everybody,

A friend came over today with a new to him 90 C2. We put it up on my lift for an inspection. The oil level was low and the oil hadn't been changed for a while. I didn't have a 964 filter, but decided to put fresh oil in the car before he left.

Can I replace the oil filter without draining new oil? This wouldn't work on a 993, but it looks possible on a 964 since the filter is above the oil tank.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Pull the 17 MM plug that is on the filter housing where it comes through into the right rear wheel arch. Let's the filter drain and you'll have no mess when you remove it!

Great, it sounds like very little of the new oil will be lost.

Thanks everybody.

Or, you can punch a hole in the top of the filter, unscrew 1/2 turn it so it faces down and drains out - then tape the hole over so it doesn't leak any more while you continue to remove it. That bolt in the wheelwell is so cruddy looking on my car I'm paranoid about stripping it out!

..and if you jack up the left hand side of the car it will help the oil drain out of the filter even better when you do the hole punch method.

That's the method I will end up using!

It is not an actual "Drain Plug" it is an air vent that, when opened, allows the oil to flow. You can accomplice the same effect, as said earlier, by punching a hole in top of the oil filter. Do it at the beginning of your oil change, and the filter will be empty by the time the rest of the oil has drained.

Not sure when Porsche started adding, well it's not really even a drain plug, more of a vent plug so the oil from the filter drians out.

...you guys are such sticklers for wording....I should have said "screw plug", as Porsche calls it.
